Petco doesn't have any YBs. Call me silly but the people who supply Petco are extremely familiar with Ball Python morphs not to mention the trappers and importer (if the wholesaler isnt the importer as well) have picked through and separated out the could be's and maybe's.

    I know what you mean.

I have a C/H baby that has INSANE flames, FADED headspot, YELLOW side. But lacks the clear belly.
A TRUE TRUE YB will have ALL white. No black/gray markings at all, besides the checkerboard patern, from where the flames come in from the side.

I've never seen a yellow belly , I'm going to check them out in Daytona.I'm thinking I'd probably get confused myself but the people bringing them in from Africa would not.Like Adam has said before these people can live a whole year on selling one morph.

Thats true. The supplier well in doubt knows what he's doing, and picks out of the balls.

Places like Petco get the short end of the stick, as far as quality.
Most private owned pet stores do too.

Im buying half a crate of imported baby balls with a friend this week end. Theres 1000 in this crate, and its unopened. So there can be ANY thing in there. Petco and stores alike arent getting there balls STRAIGHT from africa, but from distributors who buy them by the crate and probably supply a bunch of pet stores in the region.

imo, the exporters in africa are probably 10X better at picking out oddballs and morphs then any of us combined. it is their job and what they do. they know what the prices are here in us and europe (internet). no way would they lose money or give it away in a box of ch babies. there is always the slim chance of finding something genetic or a morph in a store or an importer crate, (slim chance). most of the importers know what is coming or supposed to be in the boxes, they had to pay the bill first!

Man, if you think getting an "unopened" crate is going to yield a treasure chest of various morphs and riches, you are sadly mistaken. If you ordered a mixed crate of normal bush babies, I assure you, aside from some aberrant patterns here and there, that's ALL the crate will contain. Those guys over there in Africa ARE NOT stupid.

When you say "other people", do you mean people in the US or the importer/distributor in Africa?

Those guys probably double and triple check those crates before they put them on the plane. Good luck with that crate though, I'm sure you'll find at least few cool looking odd-balls.

traits like granite, blackbacks, reduced, high gold, stripes, funky patterns, etc. are fairly common to find in crates and at importers. finding a g-stripe or pied is another story. you might even find a so/so yb , the ones that the exporters & importers think are genetic and the real deal are priced accordingly. good luck, keep us posted on what you find.

I mean people in the US havent picked thru it. Thats pretty mcuh what im looking for, granites, black backs, high golds, stuff like that.

The deal is, we are paying like 3k for the crate...i have 1000 in, but im only taking the nice ones, probably less than 150 balls. on that note, my friend is taking the remainder of them and sitting on them till christmas time to fatten em up and stuff ans then is going to whole sale them off.

No, there are "normals" in there. There is no such thing as an "unopened" crate ... that is a myth perpetrated on the market by jobbers looking to make $$$ ... within hours of landing on US soil, every "crate" is opened for inspection by US Fish & Wildlife ... it's a matter of federal law and international treaty ... the balls are sorted through by F&WL inspectors in the presence of the importer. "Unopened" my ace.

Ball python morphs are big business ... even BIGGER in Africa ... African trappers and exporters have a better eye for ball python morphs than 99% of the people in the ball python "biz" ... every single snake that is bagged up and put in a "crate" is scrutinized for it's value ... there are "normals" ... then there are "specials" ... the there are "odd balls" ... then there are "common morphs" (YB's, granites, clear bellies, etc) ... higher end morphs are a totally different deal ... each of these types (normals, specials, odd balls, and common morphs) are bagged separately from each other and painstakingly itemized by the exporter so that the importer has a detailed invoice of wait he paid for.

Typically what happens is after the US Fish & Wildlife inspection, the importer pulls the bags of "specials", "odd balls", and "common morphs" out of the "crates" and resells the normals in bulk to a distributer. If the importer is any good, he will at least hydrate the normals before bagging them back up and sending them out ... if he's a scum bag, the normals just get tossed back in the box and sold as an "unopened crate".

Virtually nothing "slips through" ... these people are professionals ... it is what they do all day every day to put food on the table ... ball pythons are in their blood and bones ... something "slipping through" means less money in their pocket and that isn't going to happen.

This is the reality of the ball python world ... get it? ... got it? ... good! ;)

When balls come in from Africa, they have usually been without water for so long that they are terribly dehydrated and need to soak overnight. It's a pretty standard practice.

PetCo is famous for dehydrated/underfed snakes..Not to bash the employees, I realize the employees usually try to do all they are allowed by the corporation and management.

Side note: Pls make sure you check them for parasites.. :)

Are you ready for the costs involved of getting rid of internal and external parasites? Are you able to quarantine that many animals? It sometimes ends up being more expensive to deal with ch animals than just paying extra for cbb. There was a person on another site that bought a large group of animals and thought they had a adequate quarantine setup, all their animals ended up with mites. Just something to think about. ;)

That right there will blow any profit margin of CH right out of the water. To be honest fi you take a few a week to the vet, the first ones will be treated, cured and reinfected by the time you take the last ones to the vet. I am not trying to be a jerk, just trying to get you to realize the potential for disaster you are walking into.

Ok...help me understand...you are going to treat them all (you said you'll have about 150) for mites and ticks and then take a few a week to the vet.

150 babies at 3 per week means it will take you 50 weeks to get all of them looked at by a vet. You know that's like, almost a year right?

I'm sorry we're all jumping on you like this, but it really doesn't seem like you've done ANY homework at all on this, and we don't want to see the situation turn out to be a disaster for you.

Are you aware of the cost of those veterinary bills? Most vets want about $35 per animal to even walk in the exam room. So baseline thats about $35 per animal x 150 animals = $5250 plus whatever meds some might need. Remember thats in addition to whatever you paid for the crate.

You can buy CB normals for about $25 a piece in a bulk order. The same mixed lot of CBB animals 150 animals x $20/each = $3000 for the same quantity of quality, captive-bred, parasite-free animals.

    I don't know man...you can't ignore the math.

    NOT!

That is false info. Ive never seen a Ball reach 6' 4", there arent many that are much over 5'.

Balls are not nippy, if any thing a Boa is going to be nippy, as a baby most of the time.

That guy didnt know much about what they were talking about.

A BCI (colombian boa and such[redtail]) reaches about 7-9 foot max.

A BCC (surinam, puruvian, bolivian) boa can get between 10 and 12 foot easily, maybe even reaching next to 14 foot.

So because you've never seen it, it doesn't exist? You've got a lot to learn ... there are some big balls out there ... probably not a good idea to call something "false info" when you yourself don't seem to know all the facts.
