Re: Solana - Our Scaleless Sunglow Motley Corn
Solana ate two nights ago and pooped, so I took her out to clean and to spend some time with Katie. They had some girl time and then it had cooled down a little outside (about 85F) but the sun was still mostly out. I took her out for a minute to see how she would look in that light (I hadn't taken her outside since before her last shed).

NEWSFLASH! She looks freaking incredible! These were spur of the moment pictures and with my iPhone, so they don't quite capture the richness of her colors, but OMG! To think that she's getting richer and brighter with each shed as well! WOW. Can't wait to see her as a big girl!

Additionally, when I put her back, she drank water from her bowl while in my hand and I got video! Not sure if it's her size or because she's scaleless, but her cheeks puff out so big! She's really adorable!

    Thanks EL-Ziggy!

She's supposed to get bolder and richer colors as she grows into adulthood. I am not sure how that's possible, but we will see. She is already blinding to look at and almost glows.

So far, every shed has produced brighter and richer coloring. Hoping it lasts, but even it stopped her, DAMN, what a looker!

I sent the pictures to Don Soderberg at South Mountain Reptiles, who produced Solana. He's blown away and cannot believe how rich her coloring is getting. Remember, she's the first Scaleless Sunglow Motley, with Red Factor, corn ever produced. Her brother, who is het for red factor (co-dominant), but doesn't show it, has dark eyes and he's not as vibrant. Don kept him because genetically he will be a great breeder, and he's a male. Solana, although she is visual for red factor, is a female and so he put her up for sale.

Don is watching her grow with me and neither of us know exactly what an adult Scaleless Sunglow Motley Corn with Red Factor will look like as an adult.

He was also shocked when he saw the video of her in my hand and drinking from her water dish.

In response to that video and the pictures I sent, he said, "Cool. She utterly trusts you. That's awesome. Her growth is obvious, every time you show her to me. Great colors. Thanks for sharing."

I told him that all 4 of my snakes will drink while I hold them. There's a reason I have 8 reptiles total and only 4 snakes. I want to spend time with each one and develop trust and a rapport.

I guess breeders aren't able to spend that much time with each animal, so they might never get to that level of trust.

    Solana is now 19G dry!

She gets two pinkies tonight. One small and one regular size. If that goes well, 2 normal pinkies next meal.

WOW is she growing like a weed!

Re: Solana - Our Scaleless Sunglow Motley Corn
I postponed feeding Solana by one day. I spent 4 hours on Friday night with a friend organizing the thermostat probe wires, the power cables for the thermostats, and the heating elements in the Boaphile setup, including running a thermostat for what will be Solana's tank (next to Figment). We mounted the thermostats for the hot sides on the wall next to the tanks and the thermostat for the cool side and Cleo and Solana's thermostat on top of the tanks where they are easily accessible. We also ran all the power cables through the ceiling! The floor is clear and the reptile area feels so much bigger!

Anyway, if you want to see what an nice job we did with that, check out this link at the bottom of the page: https://ball-pythons.net/forums/show...08#post2640308

Finally, I did feed Solana last night and she took a regular pinkie (about 3G) and a small pinkie (about 1-2G). She was 19G dry this week, and has no scales, so if she was a normal corn, would probably be closer to 20-21G. She easily took the two pinkies and has a nice, but not huge, bulge today (see picture below).

Next feeding I plan to feed two regular pinkies, assuming she digests this meal well.

Here's Solana with a noticeable bulge today.

Solana seems to be digesting nicely. The bulge is shrinking and is almost gone today.

I may feed the same next week and then go to 2 regular pinkies, but I'll see if she's totally digested by tonight.

Here are two pictures of Katie with her "baby" from the other night.

Re: Solana - Our Scaleless Sunglow Motley Corn
Solana seems to have digested her two pinkies (one regular and one small) with little difficulty. She left me a big present (well relative to a 20G snake) tonight, and, wait for it, laid in it! Awesome! Solana got her first bath tonight!

Additionally, her eyes are starting to cloud over again! She shed less than a month ago at about 13G. She's growing fast, and, so far, has had perfect sheds.

I'll update with pictures post shed.

Re: Solana - Our Scaleless Sunglow Motley Corn
Solana is going to shed again soon. I got some pictures of her cloudy eyes tonight, along with her neck area. You can see the skin getting wrinkled and starting to separate. It's very cool. Also, for anyone who's curious, the shed on the bottom feels normal because she has belly scales. The shed from her sides and top of her body is silky smooth.

Re: Solana - Our Scaleless Sunglow Motley Corn
Solana gobbled down 2 regular pinkies tonight. She's happily resting and digesting in her warm hide.

She easily 20G now and a hungry little girl after her perfect shed last night. I'll get a weight later this week, but I think within a month, she'll be on fuzzies!

So happy with her growth and demeanor. Couldn't be happy with her jaw dropping beauty and her docile, calm, nature.

Additionally, Matt, my "niece" Meghan's dad, came over tonight and we installed the RHP in what will be Solana's tank. We also installed the probes for the thermostat that will control the RHP and heat tape.

We have the divider in place, so Figment is getting used to his new digs, a 3X2' versus a 6X2'. He seems fine. Explored for a while and took a nice dump, so I guess he's good. I'll deal with that in the morning.

When Solana is big enough, probably in a month or two, I can move her out of her temporary and quarantine tank, and into her permanent home.

Solana is off Quarantine (3 months) in 2 weeks. All seems well.

WOW! I haven't weighed Solana in two weeks. She was 19G two weeks ago.

2 feedings of 2 pinkies each and after a nice waste drop last night, 24G today! She'll be on fuzzies before we know it!

We got her 6-21-18 and she was 8G! My, how they grow!

She's also getting noticeably bigger. See pictures below.

Solana usually has one big poop and then a small one. Not so much this week. Two huge dumps. One two nights ago and one last night.

Her official weight is 22-23G, not 24G, yet! I am sure she will get there soon enough.

Katie usually holds her while I clean the tank etc. and has actually had as much, if not more, bonding time with her.

Today I spent some quality time with Solana after cleaning her tank.

She's so incredibly calm and docile and sweet. I love her temperament and personality. She's more Boa than Corn. All around, a wonderful snake and a great final edition to the collection.

Solana is a poop machine. Round 3 was last night, but she still weighed in at 22G even today.

She gets two regular pinkies again tonight.

It's amazing how much she's grown. If you look at the pictures below versus when I got her, it's incredible. Still so much growing to do!

Solana came off Quarantine today and moved into her permanent enclosure, a 3X2' Boaphile next to her brother Figment.

I put a ton of hides in there and it's a lot of space right now, but I think she will be fine.

Here are pictures of the Boaphile setup now and of Solana moving into her new home! She is on the bottom right.

From top to bottom the enclosure has 3 6X2's on the top and 4 3X2's on the bottom two levels.

The animals are as follows (from top to bottom):

    Frank (Blue Tongue Skink)

    Behira (BCI)

    Shayna (BP)

    Carra and Kayla/Cleo (Leopard Geckos)

    Figment/Solana (Corn snakes)

Solana was 25G dry today (well after two poops in two days - who knows, might be a little left). That means she's gone from 8G 3 months ago to 25G today! Crazy!

We can really feel how soft she is now and it's remarkable. When she was tiny, it was hard to tell how soft her skin really is, but as she grows, you can feel the softness more and more.

Her temperament could not be better and she seems to have adapted to her new enclosure well.

Feeding tonight, and if I don't report, she gobbled down both pinkies. That's what I expect, if she's still adjusting and refuses, I will advise. Knowing her food response and that I've seen her all over her new digs, I doubt that will happen.

    Small change of plans.

Katie/SunshineWalker offered Solana a small fuzzy that I defrosted.

    Good news and bad news.

Good news: Solana was begging for food (picture below) and happily nailed the fuzzy and dragged it back into her hide to eat. I am sure it is gone now.

Bad news: Katie thinks fuzzy's are cute.

Oh well, Solana seems happy in her new digs and that's what's important.

Solana, AKA, Poop Machine, seems to be digesting her fuzzy's well. 2 loads the past two days (she's due to eat again in 2 days now - feeding every 6) and today she weighed 28-29G. I am going with 28G since she may have some more to give :).

Still, growing girl and still, a total sweetheart.

With all the excitement of Yafe arriving and being sick, I haven't updated on Solana who shed two days ago!

She looks incredible, as she normally does. I only got some quick iPhone pics in crappy reptile room lighting, but I promise to take some with the DSLR after she eats tonight and digests.

She had a little stuck shed on the top of her head that ran down her spine about 1/3 down her body and was literally as thick as her spine. I blame her :). Humidity was about 50-60% in the tank and I sprayed once a day after her eyes cleared to make it 60-70%. The rest of the shed was in one piece and came off the tail perfectly.

Seriously, I am not sure what happened, but a quick 20 minute soak in warm water and it came right off. She's good as new.

Absolutely. They get bigger and more distinct with each shed. She's getting much bigger. Still 28G dry this week, but she was due to eat two days ago. I skipped because of her shed and we had to inject Yafe last night; not feeding Solana after - quarantine protocol.

    Michelle-07,

I don't want to digress too much from Solana's thread here, but feel free to PM me anytime or start another thread (or comment here) about getting a corn.

It is my belief that you cannot go wrong with one.

I have been keeping reptiles for 20 years and currently have, a BP, a Carpet Python, a Boa (BCI), and 2 corn snakes (as well as 5 lizards - yes 10 reptiles in all - it's hard to stop at even 2).

    I absolutely love corn snakes.

They are 80% docile from the egg and those that are a little defensive as tiny babies (like 8G or less) grow out of it in a matter of days. Solana is the calmest and sweetest most docile corn I've met. However, even she was tail rattling and fake striking (mouth closed striking my hand) the first few days we handled her after she settled in (only when picking her up and taking her out of her enclosure - 100% fine once she realized we weren't going to eat her). 99% of corns, when handled and treated well, are completely docile and I've never been bit by a corn, or even close.

They tend to move more than a boid, and slither between your hands, and dart in different directions (Figment is like this - ADHD) at times, but are still very calm and docile animals that tolerate handling well. They do not get too big, but big enough to be impressive and beautiful.

They eat like clockwork and love their food.

They come in every color or pattern you can imagine and even with or without scales.

Finally, corn snake requirements are so simple and they are virtually bullet proof. No special humidity, temps range from room temp on the cool side to 84F or so for a hot spot. They do not like too much heat. I keep both of mine in 3X2' boaphiles with 84F hot spots and 77-78F cool spots with ambient around 79-80F. Unless digesting, they spend most of their time on the cool side. An adult corn can easily live in a 40G breeder for life and the screen top is a non-issue for them, as opposed to boids, because humidity is of little concern. However, they are escape artists, so if you get a screen top tank, make sure it's escape proof!!!!!

Even after keeping reptiles and snakes specifically for years, I still love my corns, even if they aren't as big a challenge as some of the more demanding and larger boids.

I highly, highly, recommend Don Soderberg at South Mountain Reptiles (https://www.cornsnake.net), who's been breeding corns forever, and who I got Solana from. He's a great breeder and a great guy. We've stayed in touch and I update him frequently on Solana, and he's advised me on other reptile questions as well (he's bred everything at one point or another). He answers the phone and emails and will be there with you every step of the way from pre-purchase, to purchase, and I believe, for life.

What's is the other snake you have? It doesn't get much better or easier than a corn, so I doubt you would not be qualified to own way and take great care of it.

Thank you so much for your update with care! It's reall helpful. I'm getting ball python next month and soon I'll be ale to have second snake (the 18 years old thing, like in my country I'm gonna be adult in the month) and I don't know whether to have 2 ball pythons or one and one corn.... I love colubrids as well...

i'm gonna send you PM after I decided for sure with some questions, thanks a lot!

Re: Solana - Our Scaleless Sunglow Motley Corn
Solana ate her biggest fuzzy yet on Monday night. It was 5G. She had no problem at all with it and it was fully digested by yesterday, if not sooner (I let her be for two days after eating). I had to clean her tank this morning and I took her out for some quick pictures and to have some fun with her. With the 5-6 day feeding schedule there are only a few opportunities to spend time with her during the week. Pretty soon she will move up to every 7 days and that will give me a little more time during the week to take her out.

She's becoming quite the hunter. She smelled the fuzzy when I put it in and came out looking for it. I showed it to her but then shook it and had her chase it across the tank. Once she caught up, she grabbed it quick and tried to pull, but I held on tight and even added a little resistance. She put her whole body weight into it and wouldn't let go. At 28G, I still feel her pulling on the tongs! I let go pretty quick and she dragged the fuzzy into her hide to eat. She's really learning how to Snake!

Solana is really an incredible animal. Yes, she's gorgeous, and soft, etc. However, she is just a cool snake. Her personality is great as well. She's calm, docile, and acts more like a Boa than most corns I know. She's curious, but moves pretty slow and deliberately. All this at almost 6 months old and it's been like this since week 2 with us (at 2 months). She's going to be an incredibly confident and chill adult corn.

Looks like someone airbrushed her, such a fantastic colour and I bet she looks even better in real life.

The DSLR does okay, but the iPhone doesn't capture the richness and neither capture how she "glows."

If you ever come over to the states, you are welcome to meet her!

It's harder with Yafe and Behira, etc. A lot of the nuance and subtle coloring gets lost on the camera. Solana is pretty bright and out there. You can get that from the pictures, just not how much she "glows" and how rich her colors are. Of course, he can't feel how soft she is in a picture either!

Re: Solana - Our Scaleless Sunglow Motley Corn
Solana ate a couple of nights ago and I had to do a poop check. She seemed interested in chilling a little, so we hung out and I got some okay pictures with my DSLR with inside light (getting cold outside and too cold to take her out now).

She was 29G dry last week and just ate a 6G Fuzzy. She should be pushing 30G+ this week. She's so calm and so beautiful. She's just stunning to look at. The bigger she gets, the more impressive she looks and the softer she feels. She is incredibly soft to the touch. At 8G, you couldn't really notice too much. At 30G, she's starting to be substantial enough to feel the vast difference between a scaleless snake and a scaled snake.

At this size, her motley pattern is really starting to show more and her spots pop! I still love her eyes so much. Two shades of red and so incredibly rich looking.

Solana dropped a bomb and I had her out to clean her tank. She usually drops two before eating again, but I decided to weigh her anyway. She weighed in at 35G. She may drop 1-2G if she goes again, but she's well over 30G now. Her 6 month birthday was feeding day, 10-21-18, and she's growing nicely.

Still a total sweetie as well.

Here are some pictures of her with Katie holding her. I got good light, but it's still with the iPhone. The light helps a lot to capture her colors.

Solana gobbled down another Fuzzy tonight and was about 36G dry before this meal. Got a couple shots of her this week and one bad one of her eating. The fuzzies are starting to go down real quick!

    Enjoy!

Re: Solana - Our Scaleless Sunglow Motley Corn
Solana loves her medium hides. They are huge for her! I have the small ones in there, and she uses them, but 90% of the time she's in the medium hides.

Why? I stuff them with paper towels. She feels really safe and secure in there. She's usually curled up on, under it, or wedged between it, and has her body against the side(s) of the hide in all those scenarios.

Today I went in to check on her and clean her water dishes. I lifted her cool hide and there she was. She was so calm. She just looked at me like, "Are you going to put that back, Dad?"

I did not put it back. I stuck the iPhone in her face and got a couple pictures with the tank lighting. She was a good sport and then got to come out and spend some quality time with Dad. Of course, after the bowls were cleaned, and I put her back, her hide was returned to it's original spot :).

Pretty girl's eyes are starting to cloud over, but that didn't stop her from gobbling down a fuzzy tonight!

I'll post some pictures after her shed and I have a good weight. I'm guessing around 40G now.
