I've switched over fully to Indented Kraft Paper thanks to this thread, and love it! :gj: Still using Carefresh for the bunnies, but the Kraft paper is perfect for the snakes! Cheaper overall, I'm sure to get *everything* instead of spot cleaning, nice and absorbant, and it's a nice natural looking earthy brown. Love the stuff.

I love the look of aspen, but it sucks for me. Always getting wet. I like paper towels the best, they are the most absorbent substrate I've ever used.

Sheree, I love that Kraft paper too. My boa loves to dump water on it and make me change it a few times... I really like it though, very convenient and very professional looking compared to newspaper(although newspaper is nice and FREE) :)

Gomez's favorite is to pee on it, then poo shortly after I just changed it, LOL! Stinkers! ;) And very well put! Convenient and professional looking is why I love it too.

Re: What type of substrate do you use?
Matt @ MG Reptiles sells bottles of the concentrate. Probably any larger feed store or pet store? would sell it. Brand name (you'll pay more for the name) is Novosan. The liquid concentrate is chlorhexidine gluconate. It mixes 2 Tbl to a gallon of water, so a 32 oz. bottle is a LOT of cleaning spray. You can use it for both disinfecting and sanitizing...wiping or soaking. :D :D :D

I got my first 32 ouncer from Matt, but then found a LOCAL source here. I've gotten enough snakes now, I wanted a gallon, but didn't want to pay the extra shipping charges for that heavy a bottle. The Coastal Farms sells it as Novosan, but wanted too much. A feed store closer to my home was able to get a gallon jug for me and I paid him $34.99 for it, but it's good for a looooong time. :) You might find someone in your area. Just ask around. ;)

Wonderful, thank you! I'll check out MGReptiles and our local feed store.

And you know what? I think quite a few of you have sold me on the indented kraft paper... This is too exciting! (A moment of silence please; I just realized I am a dork.) :sheepish:

Re: What type of substrate do you use?
The best place you can buy chlorhexidine by the gallon is www.valleyvet.com I bought my gallon of concentrate for around $12 and shipping wasn't much, maybe $7-10, I don't remember exactly.

The indented kraft paper is awesome to say the least. Very absorbant, and clean looking. The roll of 18' is $17, and weighs... ALOT. Good thing the shipper is in Texas and it only cost maybe $10 to ship it. It works great for my boa who likes to tip his water or sit in it right after I change it, causing water to go everywhere. Just take it out, throw it away, wipe tub with chlorhexidine, cut 2 dry sheets 4ft long and put in 4ft tub, LoL. Easy enough!

we get the huge bags of Kaytee aspen. The bedding pieces are pretty small and it is really soft. For most of the snakes T rex cypress bedding gets mixed in. I get the 10 quart bags for 5.00 each. I think the Kaytee aspen runs us 8 for the big bag. I tried to use straight cypress but the tubs got really wet inside so I started mixing in aspen.

I use aspen. I keep being tempted to buy some of that crushed walnut stuff. I like the way it looks but am worried about using it for the same reasons you shouldn't use sand, although the grains aren't as fine so i'm not sure if they'd be able to get under scales.

I use newspaper. With the new rack, it is practical, cheap (we read it anyway) and can't be ingested during feeding. For humidity-needing shed times, I crumple up paper towels and add them in to increase humidity. This worked great for our female last week.

I have a Ball python. I switched from indoor/outdoor carpet (which I love)

to Lizard Litter- tropical blend. I have been able to increase humidity and
Cyrus seems to really enjoy the change. I have used the coco fiber and
that was ok as well. Just changed the Snake store owner said I should
    try it out.

Newspaper. As the ambiant humidity where I live is right in the range needed for my BP. If I was having humidiy problems I would probably switch, but since I'm not, it's convient, we get it anyways, and easy to clean.

At the time this poll was created, I was using aspen - now I'm switching every one to newspaper. SOOOOO much easier, and like Adam has said before - when it's clean, it's clean!

I never feel that with spot cleaning aspen that I truly got every wet piece of aspen out, AND I could never be neat with it, so there'd always be aspen all over the floor when I was done! LOL

With newspaper, take it out, clean the tub, pop in fresh paper, and you're done - I'm sold! LOL

    LOL!

I used to use aspen also. I wasn't that messy with it , but it got pretty hard to clean sometimes, and I couldnt controll the humidity that well, its good for cornsnakes.

Newspaper ink can get pretty messy and get on the snake , so I use paper towel, it is really absorbant, and easy to get and dispose of, and easy to buy! Newspaper can be too, but I don't want to subscribe for it and only read the sports and classifieds.

I used paper towels at the time that I voted, but I now use newspaper. It's much easier. I just pull out a section/sheet and put it in. I don't have to get like 8 sheets of paper towels and double them over, etc., and I don't have to worry about my ball swallowing some paper towel.
