unfortunately, yes all tstats are pretty expensive but they can run alot of setups per unit so its definitely worth it. the ranco is the cheapest your gonna get but its really solid I own a couple and they have always done great for me.
if you cant afford the tstat you can go to petsmart and get a rheostat, but spending 50 more bucks for the tstat is worth every penny.

and I thought tstats were suposed to be cheaper....
guess not...
and, petco's rheostat is like $35, petsmarts is $22...
How is a tstat better? dont they do the exact same thing? :D
except the tstat has a probe, and (the ranco) can do 1500watts when the ZOOMED rheostat can only do 150w... I dont need over 150 though. Heat lamps 75w and the UTH is like 16watts...
The only diff i can see is that the ranco is probably higher quality since the price, and it has a probe that tells you the temp instead of finding out some other way with the rheostat.
Do the temps on the two things have to be set the same? Cause that probably would defeat the purpose of having a heat lamp for a hot spot and a UTH for warm....

Re: First ball!!!!
Well tstats are just a whole lot easier to use and some people here have had failures with the zoomed rheostats, I dont trust the rheostat with my collection so to me it was worth spending the extra money to have some peace of mind that I wasnt goin to have my house burned down or my reptiles fried.
I dont really think a heat lamp is neccesary it just KILLED the humidity back in the old days of glass aquariums, one uth on the hot side set to 90 to 94 should work just fine.

Ehh. lol if i had a whole collection then i would deffinatley invest in something to keep them all running well. Yeah... Well actually the heat lamp almost is necessary but thats why i want the ACU-RITE. My thermometer (petco... put it in becuase i didnt have anything else yet...) says like 85 and its under the heat light, when its off it says like 75 or so. The uth idk the temp but the substrate feels slightly warm. Deffinatley not HOT... Maby ill go out tomorrow and look for acu-rite because i want to get more fake leaves anyway. Right now my snakes usually behind the leaves and not even in the hide. But the leaves are really thick like a hide...
I do have foil ontop of the tank too, but another thing is the tank came with a hydrometer in it (zilla) but i really dont know if its even correct.... It moves. But...... :weirdface

Re: First ball!!!!
The heat lamp isnt really doing anything but making the ambient air tempature higher and nothing for the substrate heat, thats why an uth is reccomended.
the substrate might feel warm to the touch but what does the actual bottom of the aquarium feel like? sometimes balls will burrow and sitting on top of hot glass will def. give her some bad burns.
Those analog thermometers/hydrometer are horrible!!! they are very inaccurate, you def. need to get an accurite.
I also hope you fix the hides and get two of these http://www.petco.com/product/10520/E...=RepAmp_Snakes
one for the warm side and one for the cool side.

The UTH is for the substrate heat I guess, doesnt the ambient air temp still have to be up. Warmer then the UTH would get it.
I havent felt the bottom, except when I was waiting for the UTH to warm up when i first plugged it in, after like half an hour or longer.
So ive heard about the analog ones.... Thats why ive been thinking about the accurite lol. Actually, as far as I can tell the petco one isnt doing to bad, since it told me the same temp as our thermostat is set at for the house, give or take 1º
I already have a medium exo terra cave hide, I was gonna buy a half log when I ordered my petco stuff (shoulda got 2 exoterra hides it was only like $4 online), but now I have that half log that came with the tank. I have the exo terra over the UTH and the log hide by the heat lamp. Or I could use a home made hide if that works? Im not really believing this "two identical hide" stuff.... I have a plastic bowl or and a macoroni salad container that i made into hides that could be used on the other side too. Both have small openings so the snake could just fit.

Re: First ball!!!!
she's so tiny hehe I love it!!
I don't know if you have a dollarama but they have fantastic plants for a buck! I find pet stores are way too expensive, plus once you get bored with the set up you can change it for much less

Re: First ball!!!!
She is beautiful and you have been getting a LOT of great advice from great people. But I want to suggest that you unplug your UTH immediately before your BP gets burnt. She will be fine without a UTH until you can get something to regulate it and check the temperatures of. I tested my Zoomed 10-20 gallon UTH once and let it go unregulated; it went up to 138*F on the glass before I decided to shut it of. Imagine your BP laying on that. :(
And please get the acu-rite asap and get rid of the analog stuff. You wont regret the money you spend on her, trust me. (I spent $300 on Oz's enclosure to ensure it is 100% safe and comfortable for him.)
The difference between a rheostat and thermostat is a LOT. A rheostat only dims the power of your UTH (or whatever you plug it into) and it is very unreliable. If your room temperature flucuates 1 degree, so does your UTH. You have to constantly tweak it and it is a huge hassle walking into your room and finding your UTH is 5* over what it was a half hour ago. :(
A thermostat tests the temperature of the UTH and turns it on/of (or dims the power) accordingly. You set it to 95*, and it will stay at 95* no matter what your room temperatures are. I suggest any of the higher priced thermostats (helix, herpstat, ranco, + johnsons) but the reptitemp 500r will work fine if you keep an eye on it. You cannot set the reptitemp to a certain temperature like the higher end thermostats. The reptitemp 500r is like a step above a rheostat. I use it temporarily at the moment until I order a different thermostat and it WORKS but I would rather not worry about the temps constantly. To me it is worth spending the extra $100 for peace of mind.
About believing the two identical hide stuff, you better believe it. I had two almost identical hides, the rock cave ones you buy from pet stores. Except one was dark brown and the other was tan. My BP ALWAYS preferred the darker one which was on the cool side. Now They are literally identical and he thermoregulates from one end to the other as he should.
You could cut holes in bowls or whatever works for you, just make sure they are both identical.
I would also buy more plants and make sure most of the inside is full. You could also take another step by covering 3 sides with black foam board. I find it looks REALLY good.
Here is a picture of Ozzy's setup if you are interested. This is when I had the two different color hides. He is around 250-300 grams.

Here's my version of the 'acu-rite'
