I know this is a hot topic, but I feed in a separate container as well.
I'll take the snake out, let my son or wife keep him occupied a little, while I get a rat thawing.
When the rat is ready, the snake goes into his separate enclosure...and I believe they have a Pavlovian sense that they are about to get fed. I think they can make that association...whether I'm right or wrong, that's how it seems.
He will get under the hide and wait...almost in a stalking sort of way...and just wait until the rat comes in (on tongs)...then wham.

I have never had a problem with a regurg, or a strike or a hiss or anything and he eats like a champ.

I find it's easy for me to clean and arrange the tank tank while he's eating.
I'll wait 15 minutes or so after he's got it down before gently moving him back to his tank. He'll sometimes have a drink of water then go under the warm hide and chill for a couple days.

The separate container is also easy to keep clean.
No worries about ingesting substrate. Newsprint and a hide...that's all.

I think either way works...it's just a matter of preference.

Yea, thats another good thing about feeding in seperate enclosures, it allows you to do cage maintenance while they're being fed. Also like I stated in a previous post, I wait a few minutes after the snake is done to make sure it fully swallows, then I gently pick her up under her belly and under her neck and I set her down under the heat lamp, sometimes she'll stay under the lamp, then sometimes she goes under the hide.
