Re: Are You A Thread Necromancer?
Sometimes if I am not interested in the current discussions, I will go back through the archives, and read through old posts. If I find one interesting, and I think others may too, I may resurrect it. It doesn't happen very often.
Re: Are You A Thread Necromancer?
Wow! I didn't expect so many responses. LOL!
Well, I understand how some times it can be accidental. I can also understand that maybe it's something useful or maybe you wanted a follow up or something.
I guess my main problem with it is, especially if it is/was a popular thread, I'll read it and get interested and get in reply mode and then notice that it's old as dirt and half the people in the thread aren't even active here anymore. What's worse is if it's an emotionally intense thread and you go through some emotions reading it then realize you just got mad, excitied, or sad over something that isn't even relevant anymore.
Sometimes the person that rezzed it replied as if it were an active thread expecting one of the participants to respond. I think these are accidental. The worst for me though is when someone does it on purpose with some mundane reply like "LOL" or "OK" or something.
On other forums the ramifications of thread necro are much higher. For instance, on the World of Warcraft forums, bored teenagers will find an offical post for 2 years ago announcing an upcoming change to the game. People read to title of the thread and get excited or pissed about it and start replying like mad until someone you is paying attention points out that "old thread is old."
If I were to bring back an old thread on purpose, I'd create a new thread referring the old and ask about it.
Re: Are You A Thread Necromancer?
If I ever see someone bringing up alot ( Not two...not a few...ALOT)of old threads I kindly tell them that their info is appriciated but older threads can muddy up the forum if brought to the top, and normally the OP is long gone and to try to keep it to newer threads that are not older than you are.
If they really have a question they want to ask they can do so in a new thread.

OK. I got to admit. I laughed at that.

Re: Are You A Thread Necromancer?
I normally do not do it in the "real" threads mostly QT some regular off topic...
The only time I do it in real threads is when I find a good reason to do it.
Re: Are You A Thread Necromancer?
This is a funny thread because I'm on another forum where they actually get mad at you for posting things that have been posted previously. So you'll make a post to ask a question and then apologize in said post in case you missed an older thread answering this question... yeee it's tedious!
I appreciate that people on here can just ask a question and not have to freak out about whether people will get mad at them for asking the same question that someone happened to ask a couple years earlier!
