My vet offers laser nail trimming. It purportedly allows for a slower growth rate of the nail though I have never needed to use this option as all of my dogs have either been fine with nail trimming or have gotten enough 'off-road' exercise to not really need much trimming. Does your vet offer this option?

I've never heard of laser nail trimming, I'll have to look into that.

Well it came to head today as Bella's nails are in such bad shape that we just did it. We tried pretty much all the suggestions and I've been trying to condition her to having her foot held up and thought it was going well. As soon as she felt the clippers, that was the end of all the training - went nuts as usual even though Mike was at her head with her favorite treats.

As much as I dislike having to muscle a dog down we had to do it to get those nails dealt with. It's done and her feet look much better. Afterwards she was quite happy to go outside and play with us. Thank goodness dogs don't hold a grudge. I think we'll try the dremel idea next or just give up and let the vet or groomer deal with her.

All my hunting dogs are labs and hated their nails trimmed when they where puppies, but they love to play fetch and fetch in the gravel or on the sidewalk a couple times a week keeps the nails nice and short. I have not had to trim a nail in about 5 years now and I have 3 labs and a border collie
