We actually use the unprinted newspaper sheets from uline. They work great!
I like the kraft paper idea as well.

oo didnt think of that  I still have almost a full bag of repti bark, think I'll get some cypress and mix them next time I clean the tank:)
Re: what kind of substrate do you use?
I use coconut bark/husk stuff.

I know it kind of defeats the purpose, since the newspaper is usually free, but you can buy huge reams or easel papers of newsprint (the paper the paper companies use, but before it gets there, so it is just plain off-ish white). I dont really have an estimate, but I have used it with training puppies and I dont remember it being that expensive.
Btw, I will be using aspen.
Re: what kind of substrate do you use?
I use Repti-bark with some bed-a-beast mixed in. Main reason I am using it right now is that I had some extra left over from the mixture I use for my tortoises...
Am happy with it for now but I'm not sure what I'm going to choose when I change out the substrate next time. I'll probably either just switch to newspaper or just keep using the same thing I do with my torts cuz it seems to work.
Re: what kind of substrate do you use?
I use the bark stuff and in one tank have Eco Earth... which was given to me with the snake in question.
