Do you have hard data that supports that assumption? How often does it happen?

No just talking with my vet. And the herp vet(who my wife works for at the zoo) at my local zoo who says he gets calls all the time about popping snakes. And he tells me about the horror stories all the time.

So for me it was not that far fetched to think something like that can happen by bad popping.

You seem to have first engaged in mental masturbation and then implied that owners had caused the prolapse due to aggressive or incorrect popping technique.
You recanted after a vet educated you but yet continued with your thoughts of owners hurting snakes via popping them! I think at that point it might have been wise to step back.....IMO.
I feel that the reason there are videos happening on herp care (Brian's and Adam's; hardly "so many") is due to the herp hobby's tremendous growth and the desire to educate; always a good thing, as you discovered when you spoke to your vet today.
Keep it fun and educational and informative~ no one wants to listen to and learn from a member who is accusatory and incorrect. :rolleye2:

I still don't know what the horror stories are by popping though? Not prolapse, so what sort of horrible injuries are being inflicted on numerous ball pythons by popping according to the herp vet your wife works with?

So is it such an outlandish comment??

Damnit Jas, look what you started. Now vets are loaded with injured snakes because of people incorrectly popping them after watching a youtube video. *POP*
