Re: Crazy story
“The Secret” is a modern day retelling of the Law of Attraction, as found in Hermetic Philosophy traced to Hermes Trismegistus, the Greco-Egyptian philosopher.
There are many, many books about his philosophies. I have a history book chronicling the spread of his teachings over time, and it contains printings of fliers from 3-4 hundred years ago offering to teach people about the “laws of attraction.” Every couple of generations Hermetic Philosophy reappears repackaged. I'm not putting it down in any way, I'm just commenting on the history of the metaphysical movement. I find it interesting. If it helps people better their lives, then I say, go for it.
In The Kybalion: Hermetic Philosophy (published 1912) the Seven Hermetic Principals are discussed in more detail:
The Principle of Mentalist
The Principle of Correspondence
The Principle of Vibration (AKA: the Law of Attraction)
The Principle of Polarity
The Principle of Rhythm
The Principle of Cause and Effect
The Principle of Gender
I do not practice Hermeticism, but I do find the exploration of esoteric and occult wisdom especially fascinating. :)

Re: Crazy story
Here's the rose story. I was reading everything I could get my hands on about this positive thought stuff, and still very very skeptical until I came across this one experiment. The purpose of the experiment is to prove that your thoughts do not stay inside of your head. (A necessary first step to having it work for you.) This really requires an open mind and a lot of time. It took me a couple of hours and it made my head hurt.
Like I said, this takes tremendous concentration and a long time so make sure you have a very quiet place and lots of time.
First you take a cork and set it on an upsidedown water glass. Then you push a sewing needle into the cork so that the pointed end is pointing straight up. Next take a piece of paper about four inches and perfectly square. Fold the paper from corner to corner. Now open it up and flatten it out. Now fold it from corner to corner the other way, and open it back up and flatten it out again. If all went well you should have a piece of paper that looks like a very very flat pyramid.
Now balance the paper on the point of the needle. Next you place your hands very close but not touching the paper on either side. You want to kind-of cup your hands around the paper. Now make it spin using just your mind!!! Don't worry about which direction just yet. Stick with it. Like I said this part took me about an hour. Finally it started to wobble and eventually spin very slowly. Next make it stop using just your mind. Then make it spin the other way. This was the hardest part for me. I could stop it but it would just start spinning the same way again when I tried to make it go the other way. After about another hour or so I finally did it. Then I got so good I could make it stop, start, and spin in either direction, at will.
Armed with the knowledge that I could in fact send my thoughts into the universe, I proposed another experiment. I wrote a letter describing exactly what I was about to do, and mailed it to myself. The unopened and postmaked letter would be my proof that I did in fact do it. To bring something to myself using only my thoughts. But what? First I thought, how about a can of peas? No, something a little more romantic. Yes flowers. But I needed to be more specific for the purpose of this experiment, so I decided on a dozen yellow roses.
Oddly, I learned that our thoughts don't have to be positive in order to work. In fact, the most important thing is that you include all of your senses in the thought process. I find this just doesn't work unless your thoughts contain smell, sight, taste, feel, and sound. This may seem a little odd at first but that's just how it works.
So I went to work, and I didn't tell a soul what I was doing. I cut out pictures of yellow roses and put them on my bathroom mirror and my fridge. I thought about yellow roses all the time. Particularly just before bed and first thing in the morning. I imagined my pillow was stuffed with roses. I even imagined eating them and cutting myself on the thorns.
After about two weeks of this I was at work one day when a white van pulled in the driveway. I began to tremble. Suddenly I didn't want it to be true. But I knew it was. The driver handed me a dozen yellow roses. Through shaking hands and tears I tried to read the card. They were from an old friend of mine who I hadn't seen for years. And she was in Germany at the time!!! When I called to thank her she told me the story of how "about two weeks ago" she just started smelling flowers one day. Each day the smell grew stronger until finally she could actually taste flowers! She couldn't stop thinking about flowers. Then the other day she passed by a flower shop and just had to go inside to buy herself some flowers. But then she felt a little guilty and decided to send the flowers to someone else, and that's when my name instantly came to mind she said. As she walked away from the counter she turned back and asked the clerk to switch her order from red roses to yellow.
I still have the unopened letter I sent myself, and when I showed it to my friend upon her return from Germany she asked if I had noticed the stamp? I hadn't. It was of a yellow rose!
I have since used this exact same method to get a drum set, a kitchen table and chairs, a guitar, and a new car. All using nothing but my thoughts. But for some reason this doesn't work on people or relationships, or for large sacks of money!!! But I'm still trying for that sack of money.
