Re: Government Cheese
"Paying taxes" means the goverment gets a chunk of your income....regardless of whether they take it out little by little from each paycheck, or you pay it all in one lump sum. If you get a "refund" each year...that's only because they took too much out of your paychecks and they have to give some of it back. It doesn't mean you didn't pay taxes.
For those who are skeptical about this...it's real. They've done it before and a check arrived in the mail just like they said it would.

Yes, they did, in 2001. So yeah, I'm sure we're all getting a check (seriously).
However, did you pay attention when you filed your tax return the next year? The "tax break" was deducted from your return. So, apparently "tax break" and "small, 6 month advance on your next return" mean the same thing.

Actually, I did pay attention and that was not the case. Nor is it to be the case this time around, either. It's a genuine rebate, and not just an advance on next year's taxes.

Re: Government Cheese
I received a couple of state refund checks when Jesse Ventura was Governor. Frankly the money would have been better spent fixing up the roads or not closing a few schools. When I pay my taxes, I expect to actually get some value for it, and not see it turned into a cheesy publicity stunt to boost the popularity of some politicians.

You're right, it was probably just a coincidence that my "rebate" was $300, my tax return check was $300 shorter than what I'd figured on my 1040, and when I called the IRS to find out why, they told me it was because I had forgotten to deduct the "rebate" :)

Re: Government Cheese
Checks are coming and the economy will be crashing even more. What are people gonna buy with the money that will help the economy? Probably nothing made in the USA(besides snakes).

I heard some politician on the radio this morning proclaim that the checks would enable Americans to keep on doing their jobs as "being good consumers."
The sad part is, he's probably right. Why on earth would anybody do anything besides spend the money as quickly as humanly possible?

Re: Government Cheese
If this does go through, and Mark and I get checks, we are paying off debt. Yep! It's the responsible thing to do though, as we got the stuff, and now we have to pay for it.. (I am a debt collector, can you tell?)

Yep. I am in collections, and it is staggering that we even have an economy, if the stuff I see on a daily basis is any indication of things. Everyone buys things on credit and then can't pay for them, and interest mounts up.. I am seriously unknowing how we are not in a recession.. really.

Re: Government Cheese
I plan on putting that money straight in the bank. I figure its money I wasn't planning on getting. So it should be treated as such.
Then on a rainy day. That much more money is available.
