I've only seen one ad on kingsnake and its no longer up...I posted the thread a while back on the Super Pastave and haven't seen another since.

I think Kevin refers to them as Mo-Tels in his book

So has anyone heard/seen variations in the quality with some mojave pastels not showing the obvious combo but later proving through breeding?

I got a response from someone on kingsnake who had excellent odds producing obvious combos in a small clutch but I remember when the Snake Keeper was trying to produce the first one they apparently missed the first several clutches. Got me wondering if sometimes for some unknown reason one of these mutations can hide the other making the genetic combo pass as either a pastel or a mojave.

I've been actively scoping out the cross for a while now. I've never personally heard of this happening but from the pictures I've seen some of the crosses barely show the pastel gene and really just look like a mojo. Seems like a plausible situation to me from what I've seen.

Thanks. So if either mutation can hide the other it sounds like mojave MIGHT cover pastel. Rats. I've got a pastel who's dad was a hypo mojave. He was already a steal of a deal (great looking pastel het ghost for $100) but hoping on having a hidden mojave gene in there too was just getting greedy. I still might try to breed him to a ch mojave like girl just to do my best to work toward that cross until I can get a true mojave. I'd love to see that mojave super pastel. The ghost mojave are very nice. Wonder if a super pastel ghost mojave would be an improvement?

I think adding a little ghost to anything makes it pop just a little extra.

What I've been wondering about the cross is whether its quality of pastel or randomness of the gene that causes the masking. Either way it'll be fun to find out!

It's an interesting idea, if the masking can even be confirmed. Seems like someone would have breed some of the offspring from pastel X mojave by now. Do you happen to remember TSK's original results trying to produce a mojave pastel? I can't remember for sure but seems like it was 20 or more babies before they got one that looked both pastel and mojave. If sporadic epistatic behavior does happen, I bet it appears randomly but there is probably some underlying reason for when it happens or not but would be interesting to figure out. Like the hets for "recessive" mutations that some times show and some times don't.

I definitely follow what you're saying, and my thoughts on the masking of the gene is purely subjective. What I do know 100% is that I'm dieing to find out for myself.
