I don't see why people in the entertainment or sports industries should be role models, anyway.

I don't either Sarah but let's be honest, they are. The kids look up to them and the media supports that. There used to be a time that some of these famous folks at least tried to appear publically in some sort of decent role. Now it's far better to be a public mess and a media darling. Makes the role of parent that much more difficult trying to counter what our kids see constantly with these trainwreck people all over every available type of media.

I do know what you are saying, I don't agree, though. My own daughter was the age of most Britney fans when she got famous, and Courtney never once looked up to Brit as a role model. It's my job to instill values in my children, not a pop singer's. I don't think Britney ever made my job harder, giving birth did that, lol.

Oh and don't forgot Joe...if we do something wrong or illegal, we get dragged before a judge...they get to run off to some nice little private rehab clinic and maybe someday face the music...though a nice group of high priced lawyers tends to mitigate that issue quite nicely for them. Justice may be blind, but it seems she sure as heck can be bought. :(

Oh heck Sarah, giving birth was easy...the teen years...now that's PAIN! LOL

I completely agree that it's a parent's primary job to instill those values and sadly a lot of parents just don't bother any more. I guess my point is that it's just yet another struggle to balance the crap they see and hear. Society has become such a consumer of garbage that it's getting increasinly more difficult on parents. When it's all said and done, we are still the best role models for our kids even if we do wear "the totally WRONG clothes" and listen to "that AWFUL old music" (please insert appropriate teenage grimaces and eye rolling here). :)

I think the problem lies in the fact that we no longer have any desire to grow up and be adults. I've seen a number of recent studies that show Americans, on the whole, are maturing much later in life (if ever). Where our grandparents and great-grandparents were firmly ensconced in thier adulthood by the time they were 20, it's normal to see people well into their 30's (and sometimes 40's) still acting as if they were teenagers.

By refusing to grow up (while still having kids), it's not a suprising turn of events when we, as a society, are not only apathetic about our children dressing and acting like whores, but actually start to encourage it.

LOL I swear, there are days I'm not sure I'm going to make it through these teen years.

What really cracks me up is when a current band remakes an 80's song, and my teen just *loves* it. Telling her it's a remake of MY music is just one of those sweet moments I have to tuck away to savor the next time I get the "oh please, what do YOU know" look!

what about tiger woods? i'd say he's definitely an example of what talent, hard work and dedication does for you. ;)

it's not really a matter of 'making them a role model'... it's simply a reality whether we like it or not. ever since the first 'star' appeared, women have gone to the hairdressers to get their cut and colour, men buy their suits, teenagers listen to their music/watch their movie and daydream about being them or being with them... as parents we don't 'make' them a role model... the limelight does it automatically.

too bad society doesn't toss those bad apples into the compost and look for the good ones... it seems the bad ones get more adoration and attention from the fans and media than the well behaved ones.
