However, when you raise rats or mice and feed a collection of snakes for months or years you tend to acquire a respect for the predator AND prey. It's not easy to think about the hundreds or thousands of lives that you take in order to feed your pets, but it's a necessity and you soon respect the relationship between the two.

I think a lot of people get upset when they see these types of videos because it perpetuates the stereotype that many people have of snake owners as heartless, sadistic people that get off on the suffering of "cute" animals like rats, mice or bunnies. In reality, most snake owners have a feeling of love an adoration for their scaly pets just as much as their furry pets.

I totally understand, I haven't had the chance to ever have a pet mouse or rat, I do though respect the mice or rats, because they are what keep my snake alive. Between both of the animals, I think their both cute... But ball pythons are cuter :D

As for the video I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. I have been amazed from the first feeding (as many of you have) I have done and every time is different between my two snakes and my roommates..just interesting to watch. The title is just to get people to look at it...its youtube.

Kinda confused on the respect the prey. Please explain this to me. I make sure my food is well hydrated and is fed before feeding, but once it is in the cage...well not sure am I supposed to let it die in peace...I only feed live.

I may get people mad with this, but I am a very good snake keeper animals are healthy and well cared for.

I don't think anyone is saying that you shouldn't feed live....or even saying that everyone should have warm-fuzzy feelings for the rodents they feed their snakes. What's being discussed is the fact that a life is being taken so that our snakes may live....and that life and sacrifice should be respected. Not fawned over.....but respected.

If you're the sort of person ("you" being the general reader, and not mricyfire or any other specific indivdual) who gets some sort of emotional thrill or high at watching the prey die....if it makes you happy.....well....let's just say that things like that are best kept private. Because it would not be well accepted around here...where most of us are lovers of all animals...not just snakes.

The other issue being discussed is just the appearance of getting jollies from watching the prey animals die. I agree that other than its poor quality, there's nothing inherently wrong with the video itself...but it's title, and/or the title of this thread may give the impression that there is joy or pleasure in watching a creature die. In the long run, such things hurt our hobby and make it easy for folks to continue to misunderstand those who love snakes.

I agree no one is necessarily mad at the poster, but snake people get alot of bad publicity from these kinds of videos. This is what closed minded legislators use to show how evil these animals are(perceived) and get the mob to rally around outlawing them as pets. It is happening in many places such as NYC (almost in Texas last year).

Anti herpers start to classify this kind of thing with all kinds of evil and negative behaviors. It only takes a few bad apples to ruin it for everyone and we don't like to give this mentality any more energy than it already gets.

I feed live, but I don't make that public to those who wouldn't understand (while they are eating there Big Macs). Unfortunately many people relate snakes as evil so the keepers must enjoy death, evil etc....

No need for arguing just making everyone aware of what we are up against :)

Granted I think that was a very original killing style kinda interesting but I also used to film my snake eating not live. I buy live but feed dead. And dont worry I humainly kill the mice I use co2 to uthanize(sp) them. Back to the point I used to do that just because it very interesting to me thats all. the way they have to reposition the prey animal to swallow it all the while not having limbs to just pick up and move it. I like to watch things and study them. I have one question though why was the rat not moving. I hope he didnt try thumping and it lived i did that once and told myself never again that why i use my co2 now i felt really bad.

I am the same way as you. I study everything I see. And I think it was stunned. I wish I had money for a C02 Chamber, but I am a little in debt. A good whack and they are gone, when you think about it, it is crule, but its not going through pain, because it is isntatly dead, I don't like doing it, but I have to feed my snake. :2cent:
