Thanks! I'll do that. It's funny, what Osiris loved the most hide-wise was this (temporary) round cardboard box with a hole cut in the top! Too bad I can't seem to find them anymore...
Also, it was very amusing to watch a snake strike with a 'skirt' still around half of him ;)

Yeah, I was thinking some kind of board in the middle maybe? that can be lifted up and out once the 'decor' and top substrate was removed, which would allow me to access the underground. Keeping the substrate underneath in 'tunnel' or hole-like form would be most difficult though...and I'd have to have massive heating.

However, it'd also totally defeat the purpose of him feeling safe in an unseen place, since I'd want to SEE him underground. Then I'd have to get into two-way mirror or tinting the glass or something and that's just crazy.

Fun idea to toy with though!

Also, how large is your python? I was concerned over the hole size and snugness...

Thanks for the book ref. i'm always looking for new books, I may just buy this one today :)

The tunnel system though, awesome idea...if you even do come up with a perfect design I wanna see pics! As far as keeping the substrate below "moldable" enough so it won't fall apart, you'd need to keep it quite wet, and that could lead to scale rot etc...

    Hi,

I have a book that mentions making tanks with tunnels for use with tarantulas.

The recomended making them with carved breeze blocks with permeable membranes between them and the water storage below and the peat above. The important thing is to make sure you can open the panels to get the snakes out of their burrows no matter where they go.:)

Oh and making sure everything is fixed in place securely to prevent accidental squishings.
