I found a local feed store that is ordering in 50 lb bags of Mazuri 6F rat breeder diet. $17.86
Wallbanger: The local rat growers here (G & G rodents) grow all their rats with that pig food. If the commercial folks are doing it, I can't really say it can be all that bad. After all, they are concerned with production. And looking up the Mazuri diet, the first ingrediant is corn. So much for all the hubbub over corn not being good for rats? At any rate, I've got 2 bags coming in friday, and I'll give it a run, especially with the African rats. I've been using FRM rodent pellets, so we'll see how this works in comparison.
Thanks for the heads up on the dealer locator on the Mazuri site!! That was pretty handy.

I think that Harlan has a "handle" on the situation, being that they produce this product for the market share of laboratory facilities here in the United States and other major markets abroad. As Wolfy previously pointed out, I believe that this product is of superior quality to Mazuri, being that corn is not the premier ingredient in its makeup.

Having said that when you're producing more than 2000 rats a month you need to keep a close eye on costs in addition to the health and nutrition of your animals...Harlan just happens to run to 1.5 cents cheaper per pound here...so in this case actually cheaper is better.

Thanks for your concern though Joe!

Harlan is awesome in itself and produces very high quality feeds. My rats just won't eat it :) They do eat the Mazuri blocks instead of hoarding them(and never touching them again). Mine don't live off of them as many others' rats might, so that's probably one of the factors. I've used the 16% and 18% blocks before and had okay results, but they just weren't excited about them. With the Mazuri, they are, as much as a rat can be with a lab block, and they don't waste them.

So, my rats actually eating them was the deciding factor of which blocks I chose. I may spend a bit more for the Mazuri($20 after tax), but it also means I'm not throwing that money down the toilet. The Harlan was just being hoarded in corners and in their boxes(and peed on). It's also an availability issue here as well.

I'd love some Sani-chips though, the rats loved that stuff.

HAHA!! I used sani-chips in one rat bin ONCE. Thank GOD I didn't have time to do more right away. I came in to a indoor BLIZZARD! They had a great time pushing it out the rack wire top.
The aspen shavings.. a few make it out, not at all like the sani-chips. But wadded pages from a phone book beat all else in teeny rat minds in my house. They love those.

Oh yes, definitely a party when the shredded paper comes into play. I like to stuff boxes full of the stuff, add some treats, tape the box closed with maybe a corner cut off so they can smell it, and throw it in the cage. They have a BLAST!

toliet paper and paper towel tubes are great for that too. Put all the cool treats(sugary cereal, raisens, nuts, anything treat-y) into it and pinch both ends shut. They drag them around, bop the other rats with them, chew holes in them, and in general have a great time. And its small enough to be used even in rat racks.
If they ignore it at first, a dab of peanut butter smeared insdie for odor will get them started. Once they learn, they will snatch the tubes as soon as you hold it out.
