Those pics were amazing! I mean, I feel sorry for those that were bitten, but... damn.. I'm amazed at the power that's packed behind those snakes venom. Does the venom really eat the skin away like that? or did the doc's have to peel all 3 major layers of skin off to preserve the area around it?
Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
Those pictures are the result of a Cytotoxic (cell destroying) envenomation.
Cobras are generally neurotoxic (Nerve destroying).
I doubt those wounds were from a cobra.
Here is a pic of a Cape Cobra. One of these chaps put me on life support for seven days some time back.

Woo wee. Hots are some of the prettiest snakes ever. I just love their scales, all ridge and what not, with crazy horns or eyelashes. Love EM!
Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
There are not mainy cobra species that have a predominate amount of Cyto-toxin in there venom as cobra are generally Nero-toxic (nerve destroying).
Cyto-toxic (cell destroying) is mainly found in vipers and Adders while Nero-toxin is mainly found in cobra (Elapidae).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that some states do actually require the owners of hots to keep their own supply of anti-venom as part of regulation. I can't remember where I read it, but I'm positive that I did.
It being quite expensive would bethe exact fuel for that, hospitals (well in the Canadian system where they aren't allowed to generate a profit) don't have a lot of 'slush funds' to operate off - sorry if this sounds harsh, but if you can't afford the anti venom on your own knowing you're keeping animals that might cause you to need it... Well, you shouldn't have them then.
Precisely because it is expensive... Were I to own any hots I would insist on keeping my own supply at all times.
