Please no one misunderstand. This isn't like hey theres a dog shoot it. Its one dog that is in my enclosed carport backing me into a corner and charging us in our yard. It is a danger to my and my familys safety. Thats all. By law I could have kill it the first time but I believe that the owner should be held accountable. I have never hurt the dog. The paint ball gun is to scare it at a distance, just like the hose. I hope no one give me a bad rep for this but I have the right to protect my family..

It would be different if I was in the city still. You can kill animals that pester your animals or yourself. Just wanted to say my reasoning

It may sound unusual, but here in Oregon ferrel cats are listed as a unprotected varmint with Oregon Fish and Game. No bag limit, no closed season. I bring this up only because every state is different. I personally like cats.

    Oh yea....says who?

True new, exotic species are introduced into new envirnoments at a greater pace today due to world commerce....but migration of alien species to new habits is far from just a man-made phenomenon.

Natural migration is...Natural.... was not his point. The point was that Introduced scurges like cats, dogs, rats etc are incredibly destructive to native wildlife.

So are agricultural animals like pigs.....they damage much more wildlife than any pet cat.....

Habit destruction is also a far greater threat to wildlife/forestry, etc. Has any pet cat has ever been shown to cause the extinction of a species? May I am wrong but I doubt it. Now Habit Destruction? It certainly has.....

Notice I said "etc"... leaves room for pigs and even people.... LOL

Cats along with all these other factors you mentioned contribute to wildlife destruction. But I wouldn't single out cats as the lone problem! And I would use the term pet cat rather loosely. A cat is a cat!

OK; if you're saying that you were protecting yourself, then I definately agree; I would have shot too. I don't believe in killing/maiming things, but if it is in self defense, all systems go.

Thanks; that is 100% my reasoning behind my actions.

My point was you have to prioritize things......cats even if they have been shown to cause the extinction of one species.......it not like habit destruction.....Habit destruction causes mass destruction of ecological/wildlife resources.....Your feelings towards cats cant be really reinforced by science.

Since the dawn of civilization...a variety of human activities cause extinction or hurt wildlife.....Society determines where the line is.....but some technogly/human economic activity will always "harm" natural ecosystems. Domesticated animals like the cat are the least of our ecological problems.

I was also challeging mr. python's assumption about "natural" being so much different, pristine, peaceful, or balanced without humankind.

"Natural" diasters cause a lot of animal deaths, species extinction. Sometimes they wipe out whole island chains or geological formations.

Check out this excerpt from a good intro ecology text.
