A single dome fixture with a 50w red/night bulb for 24/7 heating is all you need to heat the tank.

The pet store sold you an expensive hood light setup really for no good reason other than to get more $ out of you. I'd take it back and exchange it for what I described above. Its really horrible they got you like that. Just take it as a lesson to do some reseach prior to going to the store. Then you can see if the store is really full of it or not by listening to what they tell you.

The heat pads usually run about $30-40 for the mid-sized one...then you can save some cash by hooking it up to a dimmer that you can get at any hardware store. A better alternative is to use a thermostat, which run from about $50 for a Ranco to $135 for a Helix.

Its all good, just go to the store and tell them that you did some research and found that you didn't need all of that.

There's a sticky in the husbandry forum that has a really good tutorial on what a glass tank should look like for a ball python.

Thats a good idea but it doesn't work for everyone. I have a single red bulb on 24/7 and it seems to be working fine for me setup. I have a 20gl tank and the humidity is always 62%, the temperature are 90deg f warm side and about 85 cool side.

Here's a thread that might help you out.

You want a indoor/outdoor thermometer, preferably one that will measure humidity as well. You can find them at many large stores like Taget, Lowes, Walmart .... etc.

The "issue" with that setup is, that heating in the form of overhead lighting responds directly with what the base room temperature is. If your room temp is 72 and you cage temps are 90 warm, 85 cool, those cage temps will go up and down as room temperature fluxuates. These fluctuations can cause issues with ball pythons, since they are so sensitive to the environment around them. That's where a thermostat comes in. The "idea" you mention does in fact work, you just might have to spend a few bucks to do it. What are you using measure the temps? Have you measured the temps at say, 3am?

I have one light over each tank with like a 40wt soft white bulb it just helps keep my temps up where they should be
