The famous liberiatarian philospher Joh Staurt Mill called this the HARM principle.....

The HARM PRINCIPLE isnt enough though....that's why its important to have good reasons, evidence, and logic for what you believe in.

For example, those that would ban Gay marriage truly believe that homosexuals are hurting themselves and society. By simple deductive reasoining one could easily use the harm principle to ban homosexuality. However, as in any case of deductive reasoning, your conclusions are only as good as your initial premises.

There is zero evidence that homosexuals abuse childern any more than hetrosexuals.

As far as hurting yourself, those that believe homosexuality is evil invoke blind dogmatic faith. They say that the bible says its wrong so it must be wrong. However, the bible says a lot of things but we choose to ignore most of it and for good reasons......slavery was wrong.

Reason is humankind's greatest gift......without it all conversation stops and our unfounded beliefs system eventually put us all against one another......

This has been a fascinating discussion, folks, and I greatly appreciate the fact that it was all done with cool heads and reasoning. However, I think it's time to lock it before the inevitable arguments begin to break out. BP.net is not the place for such deep philosophical discussions. :)
