You know, you've really piqued my interest here. Could you recommend a good paphiopedilum to start with? The longer the petals the more I like them.

I know nothing of orchid care.. but they are so gorgeous. Is there a good basic 'care sheet' for paphs?

Just out of curiosity, are you going to the Southeastern Flower Show at the Georgia World Congress Center this weekend?

No Robin I am not. I wasn't aware there was such an event going on. Where is it located and what time? I have been busy remodeling the house, work, school, getting my BPs taken care of so I don't continue to freeze them, and trying to clean up the wreck of a house from all the remodeling and spring cleaning we are attempting to do. LOL There was suposed to be three new pics instead I just see the two. Have to see what happened to my other picture. April Paphs are a pretty easy group from what I have been told. I just rebloomed one I bought over a year ago. It didn't like what it was potted in so after I repotted it it spiked. I need to take a picture of it after it opens. I will get you a basic caresheet for a paph. I also will look for a paph that has long petals for you that might be a good one to try. I am looking trough the species and then you would want to find a hybred with one of the parents that has long petals and the prodigy should have long petals too. I can't think of any off the top of my head. I don;t have any of those yet. I have been drooling over some, but haven't invested yet. I am trying to clean out some of the plants in my GH before I get some more. I got alot of Cattleya hybreds from a lady who was downsizing her GH. Many are not labeled, but I have had some beauties come from the potluck.

I appreciate it Josh. I've got some boring ugly plants that I'd like to replace with something more interesting. Is it a good idea to order orchid plants online? Any good sites for doing so?

Josh, it's today through Sunday at the Georgia World Congress Center, downtown Atlanta. I just heard them announce it on the radio this morning, and thought of you, because I know you're in GA too.

April look at this topic. It has some info and a couple of pics for you to look at on Paphs or Phrags. Here is a link to the AOS culture sheet for Paphs, but there is better ones on the net frm what I hear. http://www.orchidweb.org/aos/uploade...turepaphio.pdf

Phragmipedium or Phrags are also slipper orchids and like to remain a little wetter than a Paph does. It also has some long peteled multiflorals too. So far a Phrag has not been crossed with a Paph, but if it could be done it may be interesting. Each has a little different pouch than the other. There are also 3 other types of slippers too. There is the North american slipper called Cypripedium. They need to be planted in the ground and are hardy to north America. They require a fungus in the ground to grow. They would not be a beginner plant and grow plant. Need to do some reading on them. I will be trying some onc3e I do a trade for some. They can be grown, just different culture than most orchids. They do not have the long petals though. Then you have the Mexipedium. Its a miniature slipper and has only one species in the group. Then I cannot remember the name of the last slipper type orchid. You can do a search for Paphiopedilum culture sheet or Phragmipedium culture sheet and will come up with some good info on slippers.

I found this just be doing a quick search.

The one above has a good picture of a lng peteled paph in it too. It is Paph Prince Edward of York

    http://www.paphs.net/Paph2.htm

There is just a few links. There is a ton of info on the net so if these do not prove to be adiquate there is a TON more. Those were just from a quick search for you. I am about to g back and read up on the sonic.net one. Enjoy and let me know if you get something. Just a warning though. Paphs and phrags are notorious slow growers. You can get a seedling for about 10 bucks or so, but those could be a few years from flowering. You can get a bulldog type paph at lowes for about 15 to 20 bucks in flower, but they are not the long peteled kind. A flowering sized Paph or Phrag of the type you want can be 50 bucks easy. That is small change compaired to some of the BPs but just thought I would warn you. If you do choose to get a seedling do not give up if it takes some time to flower. Personaly I would get another type when you get your slipper too. One that doesn't take as long to bloom like an Oncidium, Phalinopsis, or other easy and quick to bloom orchid for a confidence booster. There are some people who are fabulous orchid growers that cannot grow certain types of orchids for one reason or another. Goodluck and feel free to contact me on what you find and would like to try.

Thanks Robin. It feels good to be thought of. Woo hoo. he he. I don't think I will be able to make it up there. Even though it would be nice. I will be in ATL on Thur the 16th with my Orchid society. We are going to the Atl Botanical Gardens. We are getting a private tour of the orchid house and get to go behind the scenes and see their closed to the public areas. It should be facinating. The Orchid house cost them 10 million to setup. I hear they also have a stunning CP collection. Once I get done with Nursing school I plan to go to alot of those shows and things. I think if I took off now with things left undone and wife working fri and sat I may get a dirty look. I have a honey do list as long as my arm. Bummer there is always next year. Thanks for letting me know about it Robin.
