Message boards are great for research, getting new ideas, understanding differences in opinions, and help making decisions, but they should NEVER be used in emergency situations.

So if someone posts a question and another person answers it, the 300 people that would have answered that question the same way should post "ditto" over and over again?

I don't think that would be more welcoming, I think that would make us look like a bunch of psychos.

Most questions can be answered in only a handful of different ways and on this site, you will usually get that entire handful or at least close to it ... I don't know what more you can ask for ... I think it's great! ;)

I guess I don't see the cliques (unless I'm part of it? LOL). I am relatively new here too. I don't post a lot, but I'd call myself an average poster. I don't have the years of experience that others do here, and while I have some experiences with Kashmire and what I may feel from my limited experience is good advice, I sometimes will wait to see what someone with more eperience will say. That way I learn more myself and I'm not regurgitating information.

When I joined in July, people here were very patient with me and my OCD'ness over Kashmire. I certainly was no part of any clique as a newbie, but I asked a lot of questions. And I never felt like an outsider, in fact, I felt like I had found a home on the net for my ball python husbandry questions.

I also picked up the phone and called Adam, or any of the dozens of other well established breeders that you can find on the internet if I had a concern that I desired a more immediate response on.

And there's nothing that compares to advice on a forum and advice in "real time" over the phone.

Of all the forums that I visit regarding ball pythons, this is the one that I gravitate to first each day. After that, I end up going and looking at the classifieds on KS and admiring all the beautiful animals and wishing I had deeper pockets! LOL

Thanks for your post there Adam, it's a bit of a sore point with me that anyone would rely on a forum in an emergency or at the very least a medically serious situation that requires immediate addressing. That's what your friendly herp vet is for or an understanding breeder who doesn't mind taking your panicked call about a stuck eye cap (thanks again for that one Adam!).

The way I figure it my herp vet charges only $20.00 for an office visit and if Mike or I are concerned enough about anything we think are serious, immediate issues with the snakes it well worth that amount for some peace of mind. As well our vet is but a phone call away and believe me she's on my speed dial.

So far Adam hasn't mentioned his billable hours rate to me LOL!

The only time threads get locked down is when people start getting a little hot under the collar. (and when it does go in that direction people are usually getting in big trouble!) This is an open forum, and if you feel you've said you peace then don't post to that thread again. It's simple. This thread not gone in that direction, so I see no need to lock it down. :)

ya, i haven't noticed a clique either. i do see people who are familiar with each other, friendly, caring and have a good time laughing and joking around... which is why i come here. i think that to someone who is just lurking though, it may seem like a clique, as they are choosing not to participate in the conversation. kinda like the guy at the party who sits in the corner and just listens... :worry:

personally i like it when i see my post has been viewed a bunch of times... it means people are interested in what  i have to say or ask... but i don't expect :community everyone to respond... just the ones who have something to say! often i read a post and know it's been said, so i move onto the next one.

and yes, definitely slow internet connections :frustrate make you not want to respond unless you absolutely have something of value to add. not that i have that problem anymore... but back when dinosaurs roamed the earth i sure did *giggling* - i've kicked it up to high speed *wind blowing thru my hair* all the way!!!!!!!!! :neener:

so, d-the-menace... perhaps if you subscribe to your threads and then :teevee: go do :gallery: something else... you'll see your email box filled with responses and then you won't be 'watching a pot that never seems to boil' :phonecall

welcome to the forum... i hope, in the future, you find  this place to be very friendly and extremely helpful!!!

(oh and in emergencies, i call my vet) :graduate:

Wow! I love all the positive responses in this thread. It's obvious that the members and mods make this site the great place it is.

Personally, if someone asks a question about husbandry, and someone else has already answered the same way I would have, and I don't have anything else to add, I don't reply. I just don't see the sense in clogging up a thread with redundant information.

If someone asks a question about breeding or about a herp that I don't personally keep, I usually won't respond because I'm not the best person to answer the question. If I see no one is responding, I might direct the person who asked the question to PM or email a member who I know has personal experience with the subject in question.

Most basic (noob) questions can be answered in our caresheets. (That's right, folks, we have caresheets!) "Emergency" questions should warrant a phone call to a vet or an experienced breeder/keeper. Everything else in between can, and most likely will, be answered in these forums. You might not get an answer within 10 seconds, but you will get an answer, and most of the time it will be very good information.

I'm very new to this site, but it's already bookmarked. I'm sure I added tons to the viewed count since I found the answers to most of my questions on here before I even registered. I thought the information was great and the people very friendly, so I decided to register incase I had any other questions/comments.

Personally, I'm very pleased with the response rate on these forums. I think all of my questions have been replied to in under 10 minutes.

    PS
Aleesha, I like your vibrant post. Sooo many little smilies doing crazy things (I didnt even know they had tv's too).
