Nope, they are much better in pairs and will get quite depressed. I have one boy, Sneezy, who is caged alone as per his preferences, and I spend the majority of my day with him when he's not sleeping. They are very socially oriented and do much better with a buddy. Get two females and they will be the happier for it(as will you because you won't be having to spend 95% of your day with the one rat).
