What a great idea, Zinc... Like synchronized-swimming, only with snakes! Is there music too? :D

How about a hognose snake? They can be a bit cranky but they're also small.

Also mildly venomous which should be a consideration

Definitely a consideration. If you’re allergic to bees or any other insect bites I’d stay away from them.

That being said, they’re rear-fanged venomous so they really have to chew on you to get anything into you. Most of the time it’s mock strikes, and I’ve found as they get older they really mellow out. I’ve kept several and they’ve been extremely rewarding to keep.

Of course every snake is different though, and while some folks recommend them for beginners, I wouldn’t. Younger hognoses can be terrible eaters and for a newer keeper, heck even one with a little more experience, it can be pretty stressful. Hognoses are the only snake I’ve ever had to assist feed, and it’s not even a little fun.

My two cents: I have a KSB and the only time he has ever given me pause is when he decided he was old enough (at barely a year!) to go on a spring mating fast and didn't eat for several months. This year I was ready for it and it isn't a problem. He's calm and has never struck, eats well the rest of the time, and cleaning up after him is a snap. The only handling issue I have with him is that KSBs aren't "coilly" snakes, and he can't hang on to you like a bp can.
