Just now...on my walk!

I like the look of copperheads. Getting training for HOTs is one thing, the hardest part is trying to get a license to keep them. In Washington State, any HOT snake is illegal period but Gilas and Beaded Lizards are legal to own. Dont even need a license, just need paperwork from the breeder stating they are CBB and not wild caught.

I agree though, they have the nicest colors. The ones I see most are actually the Eastern Diamondbacks, young ones. They are quite temperamental!! sheesh..

The only other venomous one I've seen around here was a HUGE Cottonmouth! I was riding a friends horse on the trails when something caught my eye. Shiny, black and round. Almost looked like rolled up black "something". By the time my brain registered what I was seeing (enormous cottonmouth with a simply huge and wide head) the horse was about to put his front foot down right next to it.

OMG, I about wet my pants and braced myself for the horse to jump and bolt after getting bitten. All I could do was look down.

Thankfully it was a cooler day and the snake seemed sluggish. It never even lifted its head and threatened with the open mouth. Of course the horse set down the back leg right next to the snake, too ! The snakes normally stay away from the actual trails, but it was a cooler day so the snake was basking in the sun out in the open.

I've had an adult Copperhead stretch out across a trail once where I tried to walk a horse. That one just kept staring at us, didn't want to budge. So we just waited until it relaxed and went on its way..

You can get the knowledge working with somebody, and the tools are relatively easy, just get quality snake hooks and a venomous approved bucket for when you have to clean their enclosure or do maintenance. I love my venomous because of the unique behavior and venomous have the best looking snakes IMO.

Yep I was. I've never dealt with bloods, but I've learned to never underestimate a snake by it's size.

Call Wildlife & Fisheries and verify. I'm not sure about how to get the permit, but in Louisiana it's issued by LA W&F. You just have to have documentation on hours you've worked with them and references. Some states you don't even need permits which I disagree with.

I've already checked. There are no exceptions. Any crocodilea, venomous snakes or crocodile monitors are illegal for private ownership. This is for Washington State where i am. Also it is illegal to keep any native species in captivity here. That is why with Gilas or Beaded lizards, you have to have documents proving it was CBB from the breeder. Or you are subject to fines, jail time and loss of the animal.

There is also city/county laws which could be different as well. Like in Seattle city limits, anything over 8 feet is illegal and Everett, it used to be illegal to own any retic but i guess they changed and now its legal. In Kirkland where i live, it's considered unincorporated King County so they go by their laws which like i said above, any crocodilea, crocodile monitors and any venomous snake is illegal. Only question i never really looked are rear fanged snakes like hognose and mangrove snakes but considering i see hoggies for sale in pet shops, i'm guessing its not illegal lol.

This is similar to my son who lives in Florida.
His garden is full of snakes and lizards , surrounded by a crazy selection of bird life and the lake at the rear of their house is home to alligators and turtles . Plus where we get hedgehogs they get ARMADILLOS !!

It's a good job we brought him up to love all creatures !!

We have a whole collection of birds that my hubby and I enjoy in the morning “fighting” over the bird seeds that we provide along with a bird bath. Cardinals, blue jay, woodpeckers, mocking birds, black birds, doves and then we have the birds of prey, owls, buzzards, hawks and the occasional eagles. Deer, coons and possums are always around. Every spring we get invaded with the Cuban tree frogs. So with that we do have the occasional snake encounte, mostly black racers.
