I have the same question about some of mine...
How do we distinguish between an unusually attractive normal and a pastel? I have a year old normal (normal to yellow belly) and a couple of hatchlings. I can't tell if the hatchlings are normal or pastels. (Don't know about the parents.) One has bright yellow spots on her back. Any ideas? Do they (normals) all have spots in their patches? What are the correct terminologies for the markings?

JustMe, you'll probably get better responses if you start your own thread.

Where did you get the snakes in question? If you got them from a breeder, and he/she didn't tell you they are pastels, they it is highly unlikely they are.

Usually the yellowest part of a pastel is their lower sides. Very roughly halfway up their sides, they have a noticable "brown out line" and above that they'll be browner. In really good pastels, they'll still be quite yellow, but still browner and/or darker than they are on their lower sides. If they one you have has bright gold/yellow on her back, but not on her sides, then I don't think she's a pastel.

Other clues that a snake is a pastel is the pattern (usually busier than a normal), their eyes, (usually bright green), and the blushing (faded areas within the dark areas in their pattern on their back & sometimes extended down their sides), and their belly (usually clear). They'll have these traits to varying degrees, and normals can have many of these traits too, which is what can fool some newbies, but you'll develop an eye for it.
