The only time that Dubia smell is when you mess with them and they let off this not quite unbearable but definitely not good smelling fluid. Other than that the only smell that I notice from them is when fruits or vegetables are left in overnight and get heated up from sitting right over the heat pad. I'd estimate my colony to conservatively house at least several thousand mixed sizes currently and the only time that I can really smell them is when I clean out the tub and get them all stirred up. They beat the hell out of crickets any day. When my monitor was younger I had to get 1,000 crickets a month and let me tell you, Those things smell like death.

I ended up removing the two Ferns because they weren't doing as well as I wanted them to and they did block a fair bit of light from reaching the grass. The grass really took a beating this time around, most likely from her being a lot bigger than the last time I planted it. It could also have had a little to do with the blocked lighting I suppose. I had been getting annoyed with the biggest log being nearly vertical and unusable so I moved it to the other corner where it could be used. I might replant all of the area of grass that died when I start to get bored of the dirt again but for now I don't really mind it. Don't mind the dirty glass.

The top half looks empty again but it's something different so at least I won't get tired of looking at it within the next 10 seconds (probably). I'm thinking about screwing some planter boxes on the back and side walls around 2 feet from the top and putting something there since she won't be able to destroy it.

I did a pretty big overhaul of the layout yesterday which included moving the basking spot to the center of the enclosure which I think will be good with winter fast approaching. There's enough room that it should still have a good gradient to both sides of the heat. I also moved the water tub to the center. Now that it's starting to get cold outside most of the plants are starting to die down so I brought the 2 big Ferns back in and put them back in the enclosure. I try my best to get an accurate length on Nessie but she never stops moving. The closest I can tell is approximately 30 inches. Since I get to see her every day she still looks so small to me. Another small thing to mention is that when I drilled the new spots for the lights I moved them a little closer together because I never liked how far apart they were before even though they worked fine.


That measuring tape is at 42 inches for reference.

You can see that the lip of the basking rock actually goes right over the water a few inches. It doesn't budge at all because it weighs a ton so there's no problem.

I'm thinking that once the leaves start dropping I will put a bunch of leaf litter in. Last year around this time I did the same thing but she was scared of the leaves because she was still just a baby and not nearly as outgoing as she is now.

Added a few more random plants including one big one the takes up some of the empty space in the top half. I had just sprayed the plants down the the glass had water on it. I also hung a small planter box on the back wall that had flowers of some kind in it.

It's hung on an angle so you don't see as much of the box. My hope is that she doesn't decide to climb up and in to it.
