suddenly temperamental ball python (who loves water...)

there is one spot on his back that looks (for lack of a better word) dry and somewhat dull. its about 2 inches long. idk if its anything in particular or if i am just looking too hard. i just noticed it last night. haven't checked his eyes

Does he use his hides? (Like have you seen him in them without any of the sides lifting up?)
How long has he been in the closet?
It's summer, have y'all just turned on any nearby AC units?
