Her head does look quite large in the photo. I'm not sure how big your hand is though. If we took a normal females head and put it in my girlfriends tiny hands you'd think a 1500gram girl was a Volta :P. Maybe shoot Josh from Outback Reptiles a email with some pics and ask him.

Great idea! My hands are pretty average sized, not small but not huge. :) I think I'll try shooting him a message! Thanks!

    LOL!!

Yes, there is a group of Ball Pythons that tend to grow larger than the typical Ball. It seems that maybe only the females get large like that...? Some call them Voltas or Sub-Saharan Giants. I'm having a hard time finding info on them. They grow larger without power-feeding or over feeding them, and tend to lay larger clutches of eggs. I'm not sure where my girl originally came from, so I have been trying to figure out if she is a Volta or not. It seems that she is, though :) She is about 5 feet long and weighs 3300g. I've had her for a little over a month and she has already gained 300g (and I haven't been power feeding her). :O

I don't know about Kimbly, but I've heard about the "Ghana Giants" for at least the last four years. I cannot remember now where it was I heard about them first, but the name was what made me curious. From what little I was able to find out, they are a very localized group. I know Outback Reptiles and a few others here in the states import them, as does at least one breeder in Germany. Although I have never seen one of this size, they are reported to grow up to 8' long and weigh 8000 grams if female. One of the prominent members here has a photograph she had taken of herself with a giant, and the snakes head was as large as her hand. I believe she said it was at least 5000 grams in the photo, and that was years ago.

Information on them is sketchy at best, why I don't pretend to know. I have seen several pictures of ball pythons whose heads are noticeably larger than those of similarly sized balls in peoples collections. The massive head size seems to be one of the more defining characteristics of these locality balls. From the information I managed to translate from the German breeders page, any hatchling who comes from one of these animals that is over 100 grams out of the egg is considered a giant. Unfortunately for me, my own did not go for me last year, so I have as yet to see if this information is accurate. I do know the imported female I have is roughly 5' 6" long and weighs 3600 grams. I also have a 6' long female who weighs in at 3800 grams, and side by side you can clearly tell the difference in the one I purchased as a Ghana/sub Saharan giant. Her head and neck are much larger and thicker, and her body structure is also different. Only time will tell if she ever reaches the mythical 8000 gram mark.
