if you really want to be shocked and feel bad for our species i can recommend two documentaries.

The first one is called "Grinding Nemo", about fisheries that fish anything a coral reef can provide, just to grind it all into powder to feed fish in fish farms.

The second one is called "Earthlings", a documentary about how humans mistreat animals in 5 categories: animals as pets, animals for food, animals for clothing, animals for entertainment, and animals in scientific research. I couldnt make it past the first segment.

But then, overall, humans are changing quite rapidly and more people assign more value and grant more respect to more living things. In the dark ages in europe, something that was popular and that people would do for fun was cat burning. They would tie up a cat and lower it into a burning fire and the crowd would laugh as the cat screams and catches fire and struggles and burns. This would be done in public places for public entertainment.

So i guess we have come a long way, but its still a long way to go, and the main enemies are ignorance and fear.

It's a cycle. Poverty breeds ignorance breeds poverty breeds ignorance. We like to think of ourselves as enlightened, that we have "come a long way" and we are better than we were 100 years ago. The fact is, we are not.

In a world where thousands of people go hungry everyday, and thousands of pounds of edible food is thrown away because it is not up to appearance standards at a grocery store, we are not enlightened.

In a world where adults who are looked upon as examples and guides regularly sexually molest children, shoot people for no reason, steal, cheat, drive drunk and kill and a host of other improper behaviors and are still held in high regard, are paid ridiculous sums of money and pardoned no matter what, we have not "come a long way".

Personally, for all our so called improved standards of living, whatever that is supposed to mean, I think we were better off 100 years ago.

I will leave you with one last thing. I was born in the south, and sometimes I have a big mouth when I see something I don't like, I just have to say that I don't. So take my ranting as you will.
