Carpets are very attractive, but I've heard they can be temperamental, then some I see are like puppy dogs. Would a carpet be a good next snake? I've never had any experience with them.

    "Intermediate" level snakes
Babies can be nippy but grow out of it pretty quick. I have even got adults to calm down within a few weeks.

    I highly recommend them

I think a GTP will be fine. Find a established juvie with decent temperament. You just cannot beat them for a display animal.

Central American boa :) come in crazy patterns and some come fluorescent! Picked one up two weeks ago and all my friends love looking at him. Super active and likes to show off his climbing skills :) http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/02/07/ysysa8u2.jpg

    Here's his pattern

You can't beat a Jungle carpet python for a display snake you can actually handle. Mine are both very tame (they are active while being handled though). They are easy, reliable feeders and mine are always out in the open. Only the male ever uses his hide box and that's only when he is in shed. Speaking of which, needing more humidity at shed time is the only reason these are "intermediate" snakes IMHO. My carpets are my favorite snakes and my jungles are my absolute favorites.

My patternless spotted has a dangerous looking face, and is very active. My friends always think he is very intimidating lol i think he is just a little energetic. Love me some Aussies.. pythons that is.

They also might be intermediate because they can be nippy as babies, which may detour someone who has never had a snake, and thinks getting bitten is the worst thing in the world :) lol

But they are very gorgeous, I sure do love me a jaguar carpet.

Aspidites (womas) and antaresia (spotted/childrens/stimsons) are easier snakes to keep than balls.

Less finicky when it comes to eating, less demanding when it comes to husbandry - there are almost bulletproof. They are true beginner species.
