Yeah, that's not an option. The point (for me) in getting up to rats is that I don't want to spend $25 a week on mice. It'd be my luck I'd create a gerbil-only eating monster and they cost even more than mice!

X2 on feed smaller rats. I would only feed a ball an adult rat that was pre-killed. I've had small/ med rats manage to actually bite my snakes while they were coiling a couple times and I couldn't quite get something in the rat's mouth with the way the snake was coiled but they were very small injuries, barely noticeable and didn't seem to bother the snakes much at all. As soon as they shed there was no trace left.

Noooo. I tried a gerbil hopper/ small once with a snake that just would *not* eat for me and the thing ran right up and started trying to actually attack and chew on the freaking snake! It was well fed, it was just mean. I pulled it out and threw it in with a MUUUCH larger and aggressively feeding snakes and she nailed it quick. The picky snake finally started eating again with a live mouse a few months later, she went 7 months in total. Now she eats rats almost every time I offer.
