It's not a reliable way to tell, nor is the length of the spurs. The only reliable ways are popping and probing by someone who knows what they're doing.

My vet included that as part of my BP's first visit/checkup. The cost was $52.00. I would assume, though, that like everything else, the cost of vet care would vary according to where you live. I'm in north-central West Virginia where the cost of living is relatively low.

I inquired around town and only a few vets deal with herps. Anyway they will charge 25 smacks for a visit and then add stuff if its needed. Do they have Health insurance for snakes?

Actually, you can buy pet insurance for all types of pets, including reptiles.

This is one that my dog's vet recommended. From what I understand, it's pretty widely accepted.. http://www.petinsurance.com/

i got our Lucy from a pet store, and I swear I'll never do it again...she had a mite infestation that wasn't visible because they didnt have the temps up properly in the enclosures...once i got her home.. all the eggs hatched in 3 days and we went thru HELL for over 2 weeks trying to get rid of them and disinfect the tank as well..cost me just about the same for all the remedies as it did for the overpriced snake. I've also seen active mites on snakes in other petstores...so you can guarantee probable ALL their herps had them since they travel so easily. Better to buy from a reputable breeder or at a reptile show - half the price and healthier animals
