Next after the Major would be Lieutenant Colonel (LTC), Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, General
A Major General is lower than a Lieutenant General, though a Major is higher than a Lieutenant. So......I could see the confusion between a Major and a Captain.
