It's kind of sad that this is what it's come too. Thanks for shedding considerable light on the situation llovelace. I live in west virginia, and this is really making me wonder about the possible effects of living one state away. Wish I could thank your post more times than just once. :(

Re: Ohio Governor Kasich to sign Emergency EO...
One thing I did notice while re-reading it after I cooled down a bit, is that the EO never actually states that these animals will be banned. What I gathered from reading it is that they want to keep better track of who has what and make sure they are properly/securly housed and treated humanely. Of course in the meantime they are writing the actual law that will be passed in November. I just expected USARK to chime in by now and give us an update?

I'm almost positive it would be unConstitutional for Ohio to try to make a law that's retroactive. They could allow the breeding/purchasing/selling/etc. of "exotic" animals, including snakes, but they couldn't make it retroactively punitive against anyone that currently owns or has owned such an animal. My guess is that they would "grandfather in" those people that currently have them and depending on how they word the law they want to pass, make it illegal to bring into the state/breed/sell/etc. any additional animals. They might also try to make it necessary to have a permit issued for any animal that is covered under the bill/law.

Another tact might be what Utah does with polygamy: the state essentially turns a blind eye to polygamous marriages except in cases of abuse or neglect, even though there is a law on the books that makes it illegal to be in a polygamous marriage. Then Ohio could essentially have the Sword of Damocles hanging over the head of any "exotic" owners: toe the line or if you cross it, we enforce the law that's on the books and you pay the consequences. Hopefully USARK is tailoring a response and gathering the info necessary to mount a defense of this crap for their members, of which I am one...here's hoping, anyway.

I live in Ohio and I AM TICKED ! I hate to think that because of the actions of some retard that acted very poorly that I, a responsible python keeper, could have my beloved pet taken away !

It makes me so mad !

I hope ( and pray ) that they will allow us to keep what we already have .....I do not wish that anyones pets be taken away. This is a serious matter....

I wanted to breed Borneo pythons.....I don't know if this will be possible now. It was a dream of mine that may not be able to be realized thanks to a freaking idiot setting his tigers, bears, lions, etc loose !

My python has never hissed at or bitten ( or even tried to bite ) ANYONE......She is far from dangerous to anyone.

I hope that this ban goes away. Somebody has got to come to their senses in the political realm.....before it is too late for those of us with our heads on straight.

Think you need to read post #5 in this thread and maybe do some research on the agenda of the HSUS before believing the press on this..

We have dealt with these matters before. Like in Florida. All the lies surrounding the origins of the feral Burmese. The Boas that started popping up in other states like the carolinas which were found to have been purposely released by agenda members and then reported, only to further their agenda to get all these bans passed..

The lies that were spread saying the feral constrictors can migrate as far north as the Canadian border..

    Mysterious deaths of responsible keepers..

The list goes on and on..

They have to include a grandfather law if it does come to the point of "banning exotics". It would be nothing but chaos if everyone was forced to "dispose" of their current animals. While in my local reptile shop the other day, i also heard a rumor(pretty reliable imo) that in the next few years they are looking/wanting to classify any one with over 5 animals in confinement(fish in a tank, snakes in a cage/rack, or dogs restricted to a house or small back yard, etc) as an Animal Hoarder. And all it takes is for your neighbor to call in with a complaint of neglect/abuse/nuisance, for them to seize and euthanize all your animals....again just "hear-say", but pretty scary to think about....where does it stop??? and what can we as citizens and exotic owners do???

That's going to go over real well with the horse/cattle breeders/showers. Most show places keep their horses stalled.

I DID read post # 5. I found it very sad to think this guy could have been a victim of a plot / scheme. I also think that our government cannot be trusted - nor do I believe that they act in " our best interest".

I am not an investigator, I wasn't there. I am just sick of people being careless / clueless with exotics ( or any animal ).....I am NOT picking on this guy. I am talking about morons keeping big snakes in fish tanks with clothes for lids or large pythons left roaming the house at all times.

Every time somebody acts carelessly with a python/boa/monitor, etc - we, the responsible herp keepers pay for it.

The media LOVES stories ( true or not ) of people doing stupid things with Reptiles. It adds fuel to the fire for those lawmakers wishing to squash the reptile community.

I love my python too much to have it taken away because of the careless / thoughtless actions of someone else.......and I love the dream of breeding her in the future.

I would HATE to have something that I love and have invested time and emotion in ripped from me. I think what happened was a tragedy. I hated seeing all those animals dead. I didn't like that this guy killed himself or heaven forbid was murdered for an agenda pushers sick pleasure.

The reptile community really needs to stick together on these issues.....if it goes over in Ohio, where I live, it's only a matter of time before it happens again and again.

Whether the sad incidents that have taken place were an attempt to push an agenda or not, I do not know. I have heard what the media says AND I read the very informative post #5. I wonder if we will ever really know what happened.

    It is sad for sure.

They cannot just come take what you already have. The government just want complete control. Usark, and us reptile owners will have this fight for ever. Think about how long the NRA has been fighting this battle. Guns and exotic pets can be looked at the same way tgerewill always be a uproar about good citizens owning both because of a few screw ups.
