I can see where the boaxball comment came from; the head does look an awful lot like a ball's, but the rest of it doesn't. :P Is it really not possible for an egg-laying species to breed with a live-birth species? I wouldn't have known that.

Beautiful snake by the way. :D

    So gorgeous!

Can anyone tell me why these guys are pretty rare in the pet trade (or as far as I know, they are)?

They're as gorgeous as ball pythons, and from what I understand, have similar temperaments?!

    Absolutely,

The little country of Angola was in civil war from 1975 until 2002(i believe) and the jungle or whatever is there is still covered in landmines. Most people wont risk going out there to find these beautiful snakes, due to the amount of danger involved. SO, the few people that were able to obtain some have bred them and they have become a little more available, thus dropping the price of them from 20k+ to as low as 500 that is what some are currently priced at on kingsnake. seems like most are still going for about 1k for males and like, 2500ish for females. hope that answered your question.

edit: also, as far as their temperaments go, its my understanding that their temperaments are very similar. and are also quite a bit more active then their ball cousin.

Great looking Angolan. I'm hoping to produce some next year. As far as Angolans comparing to balls they come from the same country, just one from north one from south. As far as i know importation is still ileagal from Angola and still war fall out in other countries around them preventing export. They get quite a bit longer then ball pythons and have a lot more "tail" then a ball does. I've had an adult pair for about 4 years now.

As others have stated, great pick up. I have a pair that are about 1 year old, but have been watching a group that my buddy picked up about 6 years ago. The biggest differences I have seen with the Angolans versus the Balls is that they are much more attentive than Balls (much like Blood Pythons). Also, they don't fast like Ball pythons. They also have beaded scales and instead of a peaked spine, they have a Y shaped spine, and as others have stated, are a bit longer with a considerably longer tail

They are definitely an awesome species. The other thing that has kept the numbers down a bit (outside of price) is the fact that most females won't lay until they are 5 years old. Some will go at 4 years of age, but the longer maturation time means you have to have more patience to be a successful breeder of Angolans.
