glass is slippery the substrate will slip around so a think layer is not reliable The problem you are having is you need to have a rheostat or t-stat to control the heat source a uth will easily get over 125º a little bit of newspaper for ten of 15 min then gun the paper will solve the ir issues. a probed thermometer is a good additional tool. A temp fix for the UTH is to make a small air space between the heater and glass if you have not stuck it to the tank yet. If you have you might think on getting a single ceramic tile and placing that over the heater to take up some of the heat. The snake will not be able to slide it out of the way. This is a temp fix a rheostat or t-stat is the solution. If you have a fluctuating room temp you should think on a T-stat over a rheostat that would need to be changed as often as the room temps do. With a glass tank a on/off type (ranco johnson or hydrofarm) will do just fine.

In one of the last post it says a core temp of 82 and a ambient temp of 72. Is that the proper temps for a ball python 82? ANd is an ambient as low as 72 ok?

Carefully, re-read the post - it was given as a random example.

Your ambient temperature should be no lower than 78 or so. An ambient between 80 and 84 would be great.

A ball would be very happy with an ambient temp. in the low 80s.

- Your hot spot should be around 90.

- Your cool spot should be around 78.

- Your ambient should be in the 82 degree range.

Your setup needs to take these requirements into account.
