Good question, I don't have an answer for that it is personal choice. I just wanted to give the op the the advice that was given to me. It made a difference in my set up I stopped seeing the swings I was with the probed heat source set ups I have (I have some that are and some that are not) Logically if the T-stat is set over the temp desired and heat conductive tape is on the probe and the room gets warmer the enclosure will get disproportionally warmer as well. It makes sense to me but every set up is not the same you may have a stable room temp so the tape is always the same temp than everything would be stable.

Stability, how ever it is maintained is the key, it lets us know that WE have control over that carefully balanced little chunk of Africa in our homes.

when i began with BP i had the probe inside the tub and my snake moved it and temps went too High, fortunatly it was not long time it taked me to realize that, and since then i have it directly in the uth and use a thermometer with probe inside the tub directly in the newspaper i use as substrate, it seems to work fine, at least my babys are growing, feeding, sheeding and pooping very nice.

Ya I use packaging tape to hold my tstat probe and. thermometer probe beside it so I have a better idea on temp spikes and drops. So far my hot side doesn't dip dosn any lower than 92.1 and no higher than 92.6.. I use a dimmer on the cold side and its a constant 82.2- 82.6.. ambient between 82 and 85.. I've been extremely happier since I got a tstat. B4 I was using a dimmer for each pad and a dimmer for thd infared. Which only ownen that bulb for 6 weeks burned out last night at 3 am.. just my luck
