Dumerils boa or Macklots Python are my votes. Have them both and adore them. The Dumerils is more calm and the Macklots is more active but still very friendly.

Borneo short tail pythons. Relative of the blood python but usually more calm right from the start. (I said usually Travis :P)

Super dwarf retics are one of my favorites but they take some know-how. They are very fast and flighty. Long, thin and fast. Not mean but very inquisitive and never just relax in your lap like some snakes do.

Just about any boa. Dumerils of course but I like dwarf boas like hoggs and sabogaes. Also the big guys like surinams and guyanas.

Very true, high strung Bloods are tied back to WC animals. Make sure you buy CBB animals and your all set.

NOW, there are certainly seemingly more aggressive animals within the CBB population, as there are with ANY other species of Python. Now, certain mutations such as the Cherry Bomb Albinos do seem to be more aggressive, must just be a genetic thing.

Dont let it keep you from getting into these wonderful snakes.

Trevor....My cherry bombs are completely tame. You would retract that statement if you seen mine. And I don't handle them often....only when I clean cages.

I have about 20 adult bloods, blacks, and borneos. They are all docile to the point where you can pet them on the head if you wanted to. Before you do that, you must touch them with the hook when you first open the enclosure so they know theyre not getting fed. I would tend to say my borneos hit the hardest with the blacks at a close second. The brongs do hit pretty hard too, but I don't sweat as bad when i'm feeding them.

Now I must say that I have a pair of WC adult yellows and they are absolutely mean as can be and will bite you any chance they can get. If you want a blood/shortail, get a cb animal and you will be fine. The blacks aren't even nippy when theyre babies. My ball pythons bite me more often then my baby bloods.

If you want color...get a red blood or a nice striped borneo. If you want a freaky sinister looking animal, get a black.

I was looking at my first blood python at a pet store a long time ago and it actually struck at me and my wife so i said i will take it. after i got it home it never struck again. it always acted great when it was time to be held. They are what you make them. This would be a good choice.:gj:

I put my vote in for a coastal carpet python as well, they're some of the gentlest snakes I've got. They're also climbers so when you have them out they like to hang on to you and explore, boas that size just seem to sit there like lumps.

Hmmm...Not sure if you fine-tuned what you were really looking for or not...Are you looking just for size of the burm when they are full grown (i.e. less than 8') or their girthy size (i.e. chubby like a blood)? That might help narrow down which type would be best.:):) If this was already discussed, my apologies...

They may not get very long, but they get about as thick as a football. I've also heard they can be nasty, but in the end it all comes down to the snake.

I hear carpets are GREAT pets while staying in a reasonable size range. Male boas are pretty good too. I just love Borneo bloods due to their patterning :D

I am in the same boat as you. My next snake will either be a male super dwarf retic or a male boa. I know the boa will most likely be more chill, but sd tics are amazing. Though sd tics are nice, I am pretty sure a RTB will be my next purchase. :)
