I would do it with the lids. But then again, I am really obsessive over my snake not being able to escape. My mom would freak! But if you're not as weird about it as I am, just do it topless.

my 4 racks were all built for tubs with tops. I like the added safety that theres no way out.

You don't need to measure the spaces! All I did was lay the first shelf on the floor then put the tub with a 1/8 sheet of masonite(for a spacer) on top then put the next shelf on that then screw in the sides and keep going until all your shelves are done then take out the spacer and they will slide nicely! Thats all there is to go topless!
