Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Well. The initial period of tongue swelling is a real pain in the rear, I talked funny for at least two weeks.
I got my tongue pierced at about 19-20 years old. I sized up to an 8 gauge at the largest, that was too big for me, I dropped it back down to a 10. I took it out about when I was 22-23ish because I worked in an office. At 32 I can still put it back in if I wanted to, it's never fully closed up.
Anyway. I never had any problems with tooth chipping. Biting down on it while eating is REALLY uncomfortable (thank goodness for strong teeth).
I noticed that after I took it out I could taste food a lot better. Go figure. I've known quite a few people that have had their tongue pierced and no horror stories. (unlike a lot of horror stories from bellybutton piercings)
All in all, wait until you're 18. If you still want one, know the risks, and if it works for you go for it.

Yeah, no kidding. :D I've had multiple piercings over the years, and none of them randomly secrete fluids!

The tongue is different, it's a big muscle, and even having the post out for some hours, it begins to heal right away.
Surprisingly, mine never fully closed up, and I can still put in a small barbell 12 years later... but most of them do heal immediately, and I blame my slow healing on the fact that I'm diabetic.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I know a guy who has a daughter that is 16. I overheard this conversation a few months ago when she wanted to get her tongue pierced.
First, her father asked her why she wanted it.
She said because it looks cool.
He asked her, "how many people actually saw that far in your mouth on any given day."
Her answer was, "I dunno, not many."
"Do you want it for yourself, to be cool or because everyone else has one," he asked.
"No," she said, "I just like it."
"You know what a lot of guys think when they see it, right?" he said.
"No," she replied, her face turning bright red which indicated that she did indeed know what many guys think of girls who have pierced tongues.
"Want me to tell you?" he asked. "I'm going to anyway, but I'd rather you wanted the information."
"Go ahead, I know you're going to," she said.
"Lots of guys, a significant portion of them, think that girls with pierced tongues are not only easy but like oral sex. It makes no difference that it may not be true, it is an association that is firmly ensconced in our society.
While you may not feel that way, and if you do we need to talk about a much earlier curfew, but it's like wearing mini skirts and high heels, there is an association made there whether you want it or not and it will bring attention whether you want it or not. Not to mention the fact that if things go terribly wrong you may well never speak clearly again."
"But, I'm not like that and none of my friends that have it are either and no one bothers them because of it," she replied
"Most of them are what, 15, 16, maybe 18? Most of them really shouldn't be having anything to do with boys older than 17 anyway. When you get older what you wear, how you appear, what and where you're pierced and tatted, will make a difference. How many people do you see with jobs they like that pay well enough to live on with pierced tongues? And I'm not counting the guy that tattooed your foot or anyone in that industry."
"I don't know," she said.
"I know strippers and dealers and some web folks who all have them but not a single doctor, lawyer or teacher. I suggest," he said, "that you think on this a bit more. When you're 18 if you still want it, go right ahead. I'm fine for your nose, but not your tongue."
I think he did ok. She's going to wait and passed on her nose.

That's a good father in my opinion!

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Since when did I sign up for myspace???lol. Jk. Tounge piercing are alright, but I would never get it done myself, just keep in mind jobs, and in laws(later on in life), and the aftermath. Chipped teeth, hole in the tongue, is this really worth it?
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
They can cause a lot of damage to your teeth. But if your smile isn't important than go for it. I myself find it disgusting to be talking with someone who is constantly playing with it by putting it between their teeth etc.

hm... so your tongue piercing is fully healed to the point where it can not secrete fluids? But yet at the same time it mysteriously starts to "heal" and close up right away when the post is removed??? How does that work exactly?
Maybe the piercing expert can help answer this.... :explosion

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
It does not secrete fluids lol. It is not an open oozing bleeding wound. The tongue is a muscle, muscle's heal very quickly. Especially one like the tongue that has so much blood supply. I don't know how to explain it any better.
Your ears can close up too, that does not mean the holes are not fully healed and not oozing or bleeding. But flesh is living, and it does try to make itself whole again, which I suspect is reason why so many skin piercings can be easily rejected by the body.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Are there any doctors in the house that can insert a little medical information here for the benefit of the discussion?

if your worried about chipped teeth you can get a barbell with plastic balls they will deform and break way b4 your teeth. you can take your barbell out for work if need be. and if your not getting one cuz of what your inlaws might think then your thinking the wrong way. if your inlaws dont like you cuz of a barbell in your mouth then they are not people you should want to be around. a barbell in your mouth doesnt change who you are as a person and thats all that matters.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
don't know if it's been said, but the biggest risk is your teeth and gums being damaged by the piece itself... i know several people that have taken theirs out after chipped teeth, eroding gums, etc

I thought about getting one before, its not at the top of my list though.
i wouldnt mind getting one. for FREE... lol
your to young. Im pretty sure all tattoo/ piercing places only let you do it if your 16 with parents permission. Well thats how it is with tattoos. Im assuming its the same with piercings but might not be. Go find some where and ask! Your kinda young for a tongue piercing no? :8:
I just got ME ear done a few months ago. need to get a bigger gauge now. im at 12... next i want my bottom lip in the middle, idk after that. maby eyebrow. im not sure if i wanna get both ears pierced...

There is no point. To any piercings or tattoos. The point is what ever the person getting it done wants it to be. Its not for OTHER people. Its for their selves (themselves idk...). So its probably a good thing that you dont see a point in it :gj:

Im no piercing expert but i could tell you...
Maby you should do this thing called CLEANING your ear piercing...
bet you didnt think of that one...
secondly my ear is healed. Idk about tongues but other piercings will NOT close up automatically it takes time depending on how big of a hole there is. Thats not even counting cartilage.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Mike, to your stinky ear, Sebum is secreted everywhere in the body, not just old piercings. The sebaceous gland produces some stinky stuff.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Dunno about the tongue, but I had a belly button piercing for about a year. Cleaned that thing religiously. Yet, it never healed. I just took it off one day & never put it back on. Now the 2nd ear lobe hole healed very nicely. I would definitely never get my tongue pierced, though. Seems like too much of a hassle.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?

You mean they're NOT?
I thought it was one of the signs. You know, like the rainbow shorts and Richard Simmons perms.
Well, just goes to show, if you're not careful you can learn something everyday.

The plastic ones will still cause damage, as anything pressed against your teeth will! I used a plastic barbell for much of the time I had mine pierced, and I'm still paying for the repairs to my teeth/gums.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
My sister got her tongue pierced when she was 18, I was 10. When the swelling finally went down, it looked awesome. I spent the next 6-7 years wanting one. Once I turned 18 my BF had convinced me to not get it done, because it's pretty hard to get a job if you have any kind of piercing in your face. Oh, and aside from the whole tooth chipping and how they effect your gums, sometimes the balls can twist off and you'll end up swallowing them. I think my sister went through 10+, I can't remember how long she had it in for.
I've heard that eyebrows hurt the worst, and nose piercings get pretty icky. Overall, if you plan on getting a job, don't get a piercing anywhere on your face other than ears. If you just want to go to college and have fun, do what you want... But after you've spent alot of time thinking about it.
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I've had mine done twice everybody told me that the second time would hurt worst but it didn't. Make sure you select a good place to do it and most certainly get your parents permission if my daughter came home and had that done with out asking i would be really madd.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Well, I would NEVER do it. Mainly, because I have no interest. Even if I did I wouldn't do it since I am scared crapless of needles.

It's just a hollow needle that takes a chunk of your tongue out, not bad at all. LOL.

:D ME TOO. I cant stand needles. But, i got my ear pierced at a 14 gauge. The lady didnt let me see the needle before, which is probably a good thing :D
Its not bad at all though. The actual piercing didnt even hurt but like 10 minutes after it starts to burn a bit.

Doesn't take any "chunks" out at all. It's a hollow needle that cuts a "C" shaped crescent in the skin.
Larger gauge needles (usually 6gauge and up) will take some skin out.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I too heard that girls with tongue piercings are easy. Hell, my ex had one and she was easy. :D The proof is in the pudding...
Oh no he didn't! :O

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
i have one and i think theyre awesome. I waited 3 years to get one (wanted one since i was 16 finally got one at 19) I made sure I REALLLLY wanted it before i got one.
For those of you that think that girls with a tongue piercing are easy...dont believe everything you hear....
My favorite part of having it, is that most ppl don't even notice it. When i first went to school some of the girls that I saw everyday didnt realize i had one til i left for winter break (thats 4 months or so..)
My mom thought that i would never talk normally again and other silly things- but totally not true...maybe at first when your tongue is swollen and the bar is ridiculously big...but when you put in a smaller one things are fine.
just my 2cents :D
