This thread is getting despicable... A lot of people have strong national pride here... And tempers are bound to get flaring if we keep taking shots at other peoples countries. We are one community here with no borders... Like was said... Lets not play the "My country is better than yours game"... It is very childish and counter productive to the converstaion at hand.

moving on past all of the dumb comments....here is the saddest thing about this situation.

in kentucky if you own more than 5 of these animals you must buy a permit ($175 i think). If you breed and then sell the offspring, you must buy another permit ($250).

If you get caught w/o these permits and these animals by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife you can get fined and jail time and your animals confiscated.

But if you are out killing them for fun, guess what nothing.

By the way, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife are the ones who put this video out.

Couldn't watch the whole video. What disgusts me about this guy is not that he is killing turtles. It's that he has zero respect for the animal, you can tell by the way he treats them and laughs at them. It's like if we tortured our mice and made them suffer before we fed them to our snakes. Just shows what kind of character that guy has.

Sorry guys... But I have to jump on a soap box here for a minute...so bare with me...

Secondly... As far as the random un-called for comments against the USA, You are entitiled to your oppinion... But don't sit here and talk about how crappy this country while you are living here and taking advantage of all the great things this country has to offer, when all you have to offer is trash talk; Address what makes you so unhappy. It is your right to say what you want (One of the reasons you should be thanking the USA)... But it is my right to tell you that you are just a cry baby dreaming about the green grass on the other side of the fence, and I will tell you that you should get the hell out if you aren't going to stop crying. I get so sick of hearing people bad mouth the USA when they were born and raised here while their parents bought their baby food using welfare checks. Being in the college age demographic... I am ashamed that a lot of my peers have the attitude that "our government is evil"... and "down with the system" just becuase it is the cool trendy way to think at the college age... It has always been like this. College age kids buy into propoganda more than any other age group I believe. I would love to see the people who talk like this pick any country... Any country in the whole friggin world to move to and start a life. You will quickly start to realize why people all over the world continue to try to migrate to the USA to start new lives... In the land of the free. You live in a country where your voice matters... So if you really don't like the way something is going... YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO SPEAK UP AND CHANGE IT... Instead of sitting back and using your freedom of speech to say how unhappy you are here, and how you would be much happier living somewhere else. THEN GO!!! If you have an issue with status quo... You can step up and try to make a difference (there not to many countries where this is possible)... Or you can sit on your butt and complain about how nothing is how you like it, but then what good are you?

(Deep Breathe...) I'm sorry to continue on that off topic tangent... But there are sometimes when I just HAVE to say something.

I am amused by the chain reaction of intolerance that has occurred in this thread with a group that generally professes to embrace diversity. This guy is catching turtles for food and he tosses them in a pile like commercial fisherman do with fish. He is an uneducated man that is obtaining food, nothing more and nothing less. He seems to me to be free of malice which I can't say for some other people. In an effort to express feelings of superiority over this man the hearts of our Canadian members have been warmed by use of the name of Canada as an derogatory term. Our members from the Southern States have been flattered by statements that this man's speech is unintelligible. Members that can't afford dental care and are missing teeth are likewise made to feel good about themselves, and so on. Some of you really ought to examine your motives.

You should ask yourself when reading some of the comments here if you think people are being sarcastic or not. I know it's not the easiest thing to pick up on the internet and it certainly isn't the most charming form of expression but it's not meant to be taken literally.

That is why I say some of the people should examine their motives. I am not referring to anyone calling for this guys death. Obviously that is just as you say. The specific things that I mentioned are I believe something different though.

This thread is rapidly turning into a prime "quarantine room" candidate - if that is something you do not want (though I can't think why it is important TBH ) then consider it when composing your posts perhaps?

Or would you actually prefer it to be moved?

You know it's funny... I watched the whole thing just now, this time NOT after having just read snake forums for half an hour. And if you take a step back it really just seems like a happy, simple guy catching turtles to cook up for a meal.

...When maybe two hours ago, when I first watched this, I saw someone with no respect for the turtles just throwing them around like sacks of potatoes. "Those poor turtles!" I was thinking.

It's really amazing what reading forums can do to your head, huh?

I don't mean that in a bad way. As a pet hobbyist it's so easy to get caught up about trying treat our pets and our feeders as humanely as possible. Which is great by the way (nobody go accusing me of torturing my mice please!), but I feel sometimes like human relationships with animals - the pets and the food - are two sides of the same coin... Anybody hear me on this? I'm not a hunter but maybe those of you who hunt can chime in on this kind of thing.

I understand where you are coming from, but I strongly disagree with you. The mistreatment of animals that are meant for food is still wrong. Even if it's 'going to die anyways' it still currently feels pain when you hit it or throw it. It is inhumane and the animals should be treated with more respect. This is why I am a vegetarian and why many others are, because animals are not treated properly before they die.
And when it comes to hunting, there are many many rules for hunting. Some are not followed, but you risk losing your hunting license if you show off your animals in a disrespectful manner. I have hunted turkey and deer before, and it is important to be as respectful as possible.
Many good hunters out there would look at that man with distaste because he is putting their sport/hobby to a bad name. Standing on a turtle and throwing them across a pond to watch them bite each other in my opinion is no better than pitbull fighting or rooster fighting. Disrespectful and cruel.

Even if he has learned to do it that way, his lack of respect is uncalled for, and I doubt he cares or respects the animals in any way. Which, the American Indians, very much did.

Edit: Wow, can't use the correct word, cause technically rooster is kind of incorrect. I thought anyway.

I agree that the video can be taken very sensitively. Being animal lovers (more specifically - reptile lovers) we'd naturally be more sensitive and taken back by it. But, you can't really change people. It's fortunate there are people like us out there who respect these creatures for the amazing wonders that they are. There will always be someone out there that we dispise and he might be one of them.

On the bright side, he's doing it for food so it's not like he's doing this just to stir up some ecosystems.

Plus, it did provide a good laugh. I mean, just look at the guy! :P

I'm sure that some people who breed and keep pet rats would say similar things about the feeding videos where someone picks up a rat by the base of the tail and tosses it into a cage with a live snake. It will seem callous to them, and disrespectful to the rat, and cruel to "toss" it, and how dare they pick them up by the tail, swinging them carelessly over to the bin and DROPPING them up to a couple feet?!?!
It's all in what YOU love when you watch any "harvesting" of an animal. Yes, he's being callous to the turtles. It's very hard to emphasize with any reptile, because they DON'T scream, they don't grimace in pain, and they show no expressions. WE emphasize with the animals in the video, becuase WE keep reptiles. To him it's no more cruel than poking cattle to move them into a slaughter pen.
It's callous and somewhat cruel, but I wouldn't be calling for his death, nor condemning a entire country or section of the country. He's just ignorant, and I'd bet that if he ever THINKS from the turtles point of view, he'd be a little more kind while hunting turtles. He'd still hunt them, still kill them for food, but he'd probably be more respectful if he had the education on them and how wonderful and cool they can be.

i dont think the guy would care any more if he was educated. he looks at it like we do a chicken or cow.

My biggest issue is the laws of kentucky for keeping native species.

Just like snakes...you could kill 30 snakes and lay them out and take photos. Fish and wildlife would not care one bit.

But you keep or sell 30 native snakes w/o the permits watch out!

None should be whipped around by their limb, stood on, or kicked around.
Whether they're being killed for food or not, have the moral dignity to treat them with some form of respect.

CAUTION: BITING SARCASM MAY FOLLOW THIS, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

I really don't think we should kill this man. I do think someone should follow him home after one of his "hunting" forays. Give him a few minutes to grab a sodey, settle into his Lazy-boy and put on Jerry Springer. Then someone could barge in, stand on his back, make a few wisecracks, drag him by his ankle out to the front porch ( all the while screaming the "rebel-indian" screech)and throw his butt up, out and onto the driveway where his daddy that taught him how to disrespect animals is lying as well, then we could watch them take turns biting each other...We could film it and then watch it on Jerry springer together.

Seriously, The disrespect shown to the turtles is disgusting and I will never buy the " that's the way he was raised argument", I can guarantee you could find someone in his "neck of the woods" one of his children even, that would find his actions as appalling as anyone here.
