This thread is a perfect example why the larger breeders don’t post on Forums unless they are showing off there newest creations. Here Kara (from N.E.R.D. in case anyone doesn’t know who she is), comes on the Forum and posts a very informative and intelligent piece of Husbandry information and some people decide to challenge it. If you are too cheap to spend $20.00 or so on a Temp Gun to make sure the Temperature in your enclosures are right just keep it to yourself. Let the other people here learn something. By the way, I have three of them. The original one is a Raytek that is now in the drawer right next to the stove. Like other people that have posted it is great for making sure my sauté pan is hot enough to correctly sear Scallops or a piece of Meat to lock in the juices. You know what, just thinking about that makes me hungry. Off to the kitchen!:D

A temp gun is one of the several tools any serious herper should have. If your animals aren't worth $25 than you obviously aren't that serious about herpin:snake:

Actually I think it's more that large breeders have their own site and don't have the time to deal with all the newbie questions they get as it is.

Re: Temp guns, folks...why don't YOU have one???
Sorry to jump in the middle of this, but I agree with Kara that for herps you should have a temp gun. The main reason is that surface temps and ambient temps are two completely different things. What if you are in a room with ambient temps the in low 70's, and you are setting your heat strips to maintain ambient temps of 92 high and 82 cool. Well you are probably pushing suface temps above 100 to heat the air space in the tub. One of the features of most temp guns is a scan that lets you cover the entire surface of your tub and will report the highest temp, its a great way to check for "hot" spots. On the other hand if you are just doing surface checks with a temp gun (or your thermostat probe), you may be running ambient temps too low.

Re: Temp guns, folks...why don't YOU have one???
Ok i don't know what i would do without my temp guns first and formost. Second a gift of a temp gun has been one of my best gift ideas. We have several temp guns in the house and several more in my fiances work van. as was stated before it is extremely important to check surface temps. you wouldn't grab a pot on the stove and pick it up because the ambient around it is 70 degrees would you burns hurt. so checking the temp at the bottom surface of your tank is a great way to save a very expensive vet visit to save your snake. I don't think its critical to own one but definately a good recommendation. We just had a heat pad fail in a tank and it was at 134 degrees. Sure it felt hot but the ambient was only at 85 degrees. We almost lost a snake due to a faulty heat pad. I have since decided to put my tstat probes directly over the flexwatt or heatpad. It was a mistake by me but without my temp gun to check surface temp i never would have noticed so someone saying it not a cheap tool i ask what is my wild caught extreme reduced pattern worth to me. Priceless. Kind of like a mastercard commercial. OK i have rambled on long enough about this. by the way my fiance says work bought him a new temp gun that hooks up to a computer to data log temps. its a wonderful world when work pays for the hobby.

I wish my work bought me stuff I would have been able to buy another $10-$13,000 last year on my snakes. Oh why are tools soo damn much, lol. To think of the things I could/would have If I spent all that on herps.

    Hmm quick question???

can you get the temp inside a plastic tub from the out side or do you have to pull the tub out and then shoot the side you want (warm or cold?).

Just a quick update - I NOW own a temp gun, thanks to a b-day present from Kara! Thanks Kara!

I can't stop "shooting" things now. The incubator is spot on! :D

Karl is getting sick of it now and is now trying the "you're going to wear out the battery" line on me now.

Well think about it Robin, if you run out of snake stuff to shoot at, you can now tell Karl just exactly to the degree what temperature his pot roast Sunday dinner is at!

So, I have been thinking about getting a temp gun, and money is tight. Are the lower priced models just as accurate as some of the quite expensive models? Ie-is a PE-1, PE-2, or some of the lower RBI tempguns reliable and accurate, so that I wont want/need to buy a better one later.

I'm not sure how long you've been on reptile forums, but many years ago, the atmosphere was very different and the big breeders were regular posters on various forums.

I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that they maintain their own sites.

As soon as the ball morph craze started and a lot of money started flowing around, along came the haters.

And now we see that most of the breeders who actually "make it" in the business don't mingle as much on the forums.

I think we're lucky that Kara still posts here.

Neil, would the temp guns refer to this scan thing in their ad or is this something that's only common place in some guns? I'm purchasing one later this month and would like to get one that does this so if you have any particular brands in mind, please share.

I've been on the temp gun boat for the last 6 years or so and they are a God-send for herpers.

Anybody who is too cheap to spend $50 on something that will help you take better care of your animals doesn't need to have animals in the first place.

I have one of the yellow temp guns from Reptile basics that has the laser pointer on it and it is the best model I have used thusfar.
