Re: What are you in it for?
I breed, so that one morning I can wake up, look in the incubator, and see this! (well, after slitting them..)

Re: What are you in it for?
started as a hobby, it still is a hobby.. like someone else said, if i can make some money while im at it, awesome!
we have acquired our snakes on purpose, normal female, spider female (soon), male pastel.. all those moves were certainly intentional

Re: What are you in it for?
When i was breeding ball pythons and corn snakes it was for the pure enjoyment:gj:.Its a great feeling seeing those little eyes peek out at you then duck in when they notice you watching them :D

Re: What are you in it for?
I haven't been online in almost 2 days, and I wanted to see what responses I got to this particular thread... just to see what people said.
When I saw it on the top of the list with over 50 responses, I read intently EVERY SINGLE RESPONSE, and I have to tell you all...
I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY YOU ALL FREAKIN' ROCK!!!!
Ok... I feel like that drunk guy who tells everyone he loves them, LOL! THIS is the reason I love this forum so much!!!!! You all answered honestly, and you all are exactly like me when it comes to these amazing critters! Screw the poll... I know why you're in it. I can feel it in your hearts :)
Other critter forums and breeders... they're nuts, like a weird cult (look up chinchilla breeders sometime). You guys are real. This is the best thread I could have ever thought up during a midnight, restless, pets-on-the-mind internet run.

Re: What are you in it for?
I agree, great post. :gj:
As with many, what started as a hobby eventually changed into a passion. I love the different morphs, I get soooo excited about pairing this one and that one to get something different, when we get eggs I'm on a high, when those little noses start to pip I go over the roof, once we get a new hatchling to eat it's time to celebrate. Watching the babies grow into young adults ready to breed is also thrilling. And lets not even talk about the possibility of creating a new morph that you would have the honor of naming . . .
Yeah the cleaning is sometimes tiring, especially after a long day at work and keeping those rat and mice colonies happy and producing is time consuming, but that's a necessary part.
Bottom line, if we didn't have this passion I don't know what I would be doing with my spare time that is now devoted to snakes that would be so rewarding.

Re: What are you in it for?
I am in it for the money the money only. YEAH RIGHT. I just want to make enough money to pay for the rats food and for a little on the electric bill.
Really I love the snakes. The do not wake me up barking or chew my furniture. Nothing makes me feel better than seeing a new baby hatch. I love these animals.

Re: What are you in it for?
I selected both money and hobby in the poll. I love all the variety of BP's that there are and want to try producing them all, as well as reptiles in general. I am not looking to get rich, but if i could turn my passion into a full time job, what more could i ask for?

Re: What are you in it for?
Not enough options. Hobby turns into to many snakes to have a full time job....

Re: What are you in it for?
Love the animals, love the people who love the animals (most of the time) and enjoy communing with the community that does!

Re: What are you in it for?
Who in here plan to be a full time breeder?

Re: What are you in it for?
Well, for me, when I do get started breeding (corns first next season, then BPs once mine are big enough) it will be for the excitement, the experience of breeding animals (want to run a refuge, so I'll have to know these things), and for the love of the snakes. Of course, money comes into it as well.. especially for my BF who is only letting me breed for the monetary return to cover food and heat. :)

Re: What are you in it for?
It's just a hobby for me. I love my snakes but I'm not in it to make any money off of them.

Re: What are you in it for?
I think a lot of us have had delusions of grandure when considering breeding as a full time job. I'll be completely honest, I've thought about it non-stop for about 4 years. I love these critters, I see the potential in the market for a great return on my investments... the only "problem" is executing a plan that not only satisfies me but puts the snakes first and keeps it still a hobby and not a chore.
I have plans, but you know what they say about plans...

My husband wants me to be. He said that if I could make the numbers work and bring in at least as much as I make at my fulltime job a week/month, he'd support me fully. But I am loathful to quit my fulltime job and its guaranteed paycheck. And I do not see myself as anywhere near the big reputable breeders out there at this time.. and don't have huge mucho bucks to invest.. I like it the way that it is now for me. Some monetary/trade reward for breeding last year, and this year I have my fingers crossed :)
I know how dreams are. My husband wants to have his own tattoo shop eventually, and believe me I dream of that almost every night. For now he is happy to work at a local shop as an independent contractor and do parties on the side. But if you have no dreams and aspirations, what is the point of life!

Re: What are you in it for?
I love my snakes like part of the family. But I will sell their offspring to make extra cash. Going to school is expensive.

Re: What are you in it for?
I'm all about getting Banned!! LOL.. And some of these snakes are kinda cute...

Re: What are you in it for?
I got my first snake like 8 years ago.
When I got her, I said to myself, one is enough..I dont need more.
About 4 years later I started getting more and more into them.
Then I had around 40-45 snakes. But I then had to sell most of them. Now Im getting back into it.
I bought morphs, and a group of normal females.
For me, Its just a hobby, just like tattooing, fishing, paintball, and what ever else Im doing.
When I do start producing, Im not really doing it for money, I mean yea, Im going to sell some, but pretty much just to make money back on what I spent. I really just want the satisfaction of showing someone my snakes and going "See that one there? I produced him."
You know what I mean?

Re: What are you in it for?
To me this is my hobby if i make a few bucks off it so be it.

Re: What are you in it for?
Another aspect... Anyone can go out and look in the classifieds online and buy a morph. Or heck, even a normal for that matter. But producing your own.. it just gives you this awesome feeling of accomplishment when you look at that little life, and know that YOU made it possible. I only have one '07 that I held back to keep; a pastel female. I love this little snake; I have handled her since it was appropriate (once she was feeding well and growing) and she's very docile and yet eats like a champ. It is just awesome to know that you produced a snake; to see and know all of its little pattern quirks, etc.

Re: What are you in it for?
Whoa...
You can actually MAKE money at this??????
Here's to hobbies completely out of control...well past the point of reason or even general sanity!!!!
Next thing you know, my chickens will pay for themselves. ;)
I'd rather live frugally & do what I LOVE for "work" than make tons of money bound to a job I can't stand.
