And like I said in the previous post, you don't have to answer, if you are tired to answer the same question again and again, just don't answer it, someone else will come along and answer it sooner or later.

i will say no more, obviously im just making enemies here, as usual.
Making enemies and having a discussion (even if heated), are two different things.

WOW!! All this on bp.net? Chillax people, Your scarring away all the Newbies.... LOL! Bring on those questions! I'll answer the same one 20 times if needed!

Re: Same Questions Over and Over
WOW................ good views on the subject from all.
my 2 cents, when i first joined i never used a forum and didnt know how to navigate around a whole page full of text. i just posted, got answered, and i was happy. like stated, when questions are answered people dont just put the answer. they also ask other questions about temps, humidity, cage size/tub size, size of snake, and other things. that helps answer the questions that would never be asked cause they didnt know something might be wrong. its a great community cause we talk about reptiles and other things. you get to meet some wonderful people when you have conversations instead of just *searching*.
COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY, THE REST OF YOU WILL FOLLOW ME!

Re: Same Questions Over and Over
I admit first of all that I did not read every single post in this thread and that I am therefore one of type of persons that caused this thread to come into being. But I suspect that the answer is really quite simple.I have found that when you are in your late teens and early 20's you know everything. When you get to be about 30 you suddenly realize that you don't know everything anymore. When you hit 40 you realize how little you actually do know.By the time you are 50 you are really reduced to asking a lot of questions.I believe that what is going on here is that some of the people who are still young enough to know everything are having trouble being patient with the others that have varying degrees of diminished capacity.:rolleye2:

Re: Same Questions Over and Over
Personally I feel that the only dumb question is the one that is not asked!! (I think that may be the only thing I retained from Highschool....JK!!). I may not ask a million questions on here, when I first started out here I was one of those that probably read just about every BP husbandry related thread here then joined because I thought that, just from reading all the millions of threads that I did read (it seemed like it anyway..LOL) this seemed like a forum that I could really enjoy and continue to learn new stuff from. And from being a member on here I have found that I continue to learn and enjoy doing so and enjoy spending time here with all the rest of you. Personally, I don't mind answering all the questions that all the new people ask, I really enjoy being helpful to others with what I can. I have posted this one time before in another thread, but I feel that by helping out others even with their questions that have been asked many times before ( and will be asked many more times after) this is my small way of giving back to this site. May be insignificant to some, but answering someones question can really give that new person some sort of relief from worrying or a slight boost in their confidence that they are doing something right. And no, not everyone researches every little detail before buying an animal. But I have to give credit to those that try and do right for their animals by coming here. And there is always the problem that they may have researched elsewhere (on other sites) that by the time they find this place they may be just so confused that it may be just easier to them to just ask their question than to go through a million threads to find their answer. I read a bunch of other sites for info about BPs and it seemed that the more that I read the more that I was confused, what temp? what humidity level? etc. It wasn't until I found this site that my confusion eased and I became certain about how to care for my BP. And like others have said, some of the newer people may not know enough about forums to understand how to use the search function. I was one of those when I first joined, this particular forum set up was a little new to me then. So personally I don't mind seeing the same questions asked over and over again.
-
Re: Same Questions Over and Over
When I did research before I bought my BP, I got wrong information. (I was told 85-88d durring the day 72-78d at night) I'm glad I found this forum. She is much happier now.
-
Re: Same Questions Over and Over
honestly, why do you care. its they're problem if they post these things that are pritty much duplicates of another thread. they may have just not found it any were else on the forum. does it actually effect you directly? no! its just another thing you can ignore. i personally think that this thread is kind of ridiculous. no offense or any thing. its one of those that is not needed. much like those threads that ask the things that were already said. but usually Im not one to complain. i just had to post this.
-
Re: Same Questions Over and Over
Indeed the internet is full of conflicting information about feeding, temps, enclosure size, handling and everything else. As a newbie I have found this site to be a place where people are welcoming and willing to help one another. There is also much less elitism and latent hostility that can be found elsewhere.

And some people just like to talk....and therefore are more likely to ask their questions "out loud" rather than sit quietly and wade through someone else's questions.
I'm coming into this "late" (as in, SO MANY PAGES!!!), but I just wanted to respond to what Judy said...I am one of those people-types that get overwhelmed very easily with the amount of information there is here (and a lot of other places) to wade through. I completely understand people that ask questions that probably have already been answered because they just can't keep their minds together long enough to go through pages, upon pages (like this thread, thus why i responded to Judy's comment only, i can't read the rest because i have a really short attention span, sadly. it'd take me a long time to concentrate fully on this entire thread).
I have been a bit irritated with overly-asked questions (especially in the rat world!), but I don't show it because I am the exact same way as the person asking the question, and if not exactly the same, I am still similar in the fact that I cannot concentrate long enough to go through the 1,000's of posts there are to get a satisfying answer. And some threads ask a specific question, then the thread gets carried off into oblivion about nothing, really, for a page or two (or more) and then you'll finally start getting real answers. That doesn't bother me, either, because this forum is so open and friendly, I can just ask in my own post and get answers...usually right away! :)
I try to help when I can. I don't much care about multiples of the same questions. I think the lot of us are here to help when we can, and because we enjoy this forum. Doesn't matter how many times a question is asked. Wouldn't it be terrible if everyone began getting angry because a lot of us post ball python pictures of our normal kids? That's what I'm comparing this to. I NEVER get tired of looking at people's snakes, just like I NEVER get tired of reading the questions and answers, and all posts here. :D
(i got carried away with my ramble, sorry!)

Re: Same Questions Over and Over
If it weren't for the need to ask questions on a daily basis; what would be the point of having a forum!? We would all just be seasoned pros, tossing up pics of our snakes; we would just need the Photos category. Everything else could be types out in tomes, to be read by the curious in need of help..
Unless weird new questions popped up (how do your snakes react to the dust from that atom bomb!) or (how has the super-acid rain, that eats through our house's roofs, affecting Your snake??) then no questions would need to be asked, really. No informational forum would be needed.
Not to mention; a lot of the time, info that is already posted, is outdated. I found a few things amiss with the fedex thread on Fauna, for example; it was made in 2004! So, I asked away.

Re: Same Questions Over and Over
I do have to admit.. it does bug me though, when a thread on one subject is made, and someone re-posts the same subject that same day that the first thread is still in view. And it's always entertaining to see the old standby thread of "is my snake, that I got for $20 at Petco, a morph?"

Maybe the point of the forum is to start new threads on a whim about every thought that pops into our head? I bet that's the point of having a ball python forum.
BTW...your first response is quite condradictory to your second...
and also, this lovely forum has a thread on FedEx Shipping. I love the search feature.:D

I don't frequent forums to search past threads. I go to post new ones, to see what's new. Old threads are most-likely outdated. Take the whole widespread use of human heatpads, which most of us did and recommended, but now we know it is unsafe. Either there are old threads saying that they are ok, or they were removed b/c it is incorrect info.
But am I contradicting myself to say that there should be a middle ground? This middle ground is where I stand.. so that is why I posted two opinions.
I could definately add a paragraph or 2 to the fedex post, after personally going through them and their foot-dragging ways! I appreciate Stickies, but I want to get people's experiences, or else I would go buy a book.

Re: Same Questions Over and Over
When I first joined this forum, I didn't really even notice the search feature, so I'm sure I posted a few duplicate threads, but it was nice that I got answers to my questions, and suggestions that I didn't even ask for. :P
Now that I have been here for a bit, I have noticed that the same questions do get asked repeatedly. One thing I did do was talk to JLC a little about making the caresheets more noticeable. I know that will not stop the duplicate thread issue. I don't really think there is anything wrong with posting a duplicate thread, and usually when I read one, someone else has already beat me to answer the question.
There are days that I am in the mood to answer them, and days that I am not... on the latter days, I don't even really open the thread, and there's nothing wrong with that. One of the cool things about this forum is we all take turns helping people out without having to arrange a schedule... there are so many people here that love to help that questions don't just go unanswered, and it's no big deal if you give someone else a turn to help out. :)

Re: Same Questions Over and Over
Hmmm. I can just about identify with everything that has been posted thus far. Yes, there are always going to be newbies asking simple questions (i.e. those that can be answered by searching). Yes, there are always going to be folks around to answer those questions (which is great, since we all need some support sometimes), and there are always going to be those who are irritated/bemused/distracted by a rash of newbie-based questions.
My main frustration lies not in the same questions being asked over and over, but in a new keeper asking ALL the basic questions, rapid-fire, when it's obvious that they've done next to no research on their own. Part of being a responsible reptile keeper is having the ability and motivation to RESEARCH & REASON!!! Yes, for a large percentage of keepers, reptiles are just pets. That does not, however, negate the fact that in a larger perspective, these animals are part pet & part science project so to speak. And as a result, they are going to require keeper education outside of the standard realm of "give it food & water and some attention from time to time." Reptiles do not have the same set of requirements as a dog or cat, and herpetoculturists have the responsibility of self-education for the sake of proper maintenance, regardless of experience level.
If we're not willing to learn how to read our animals and be tuned into them, we're never going to learn how to grow as keepers & identify the subtleties that define when something with our beloved herps is out of whack vs. status quo. Being able to do so requires discernment...i.e. reading books, websites, magazines, caresheets & developing an idea for what is "standard" and what is of concern when it comes to herp behavior/care.
The brand-new keepers who constantly show *no* desire to learn on their own & want to be spoon-fed EVERYTHING are what bother me, moreso than a new keeper asking questions as a point of comparison, for example "I read this, but my snake is doing THIS, what do you guys/gals think?" instead of "Tell me everything I need to know to set up a cage for my BP/What do I do if my snake has mites tell me everything to do/I am going to breed lots of ball pythons will you guys buy them and hey, how do I make Pastels?" :devilish:
Instead of getting irritated when someone has a genuine question to ask, view it as a challenge to refine your OWN skills even more! Rise to the occasion & give the best advice you possibly can. Look at it from the perspective of "how would I answer this question, and is my answer the best advice I could possibly give in consideration of the well-being of this keeper & animal?" We should ALL strive to meet this challenge, as building on the basics and consistently refining them is what will give us even more ground to grow as keepers & breeders. By the same token, it IS okay to offer gentle prodding to those who sincerely need to do their own homework for the sake of growing as a keeper. Instead of having a "hey you suck, look up a caresheet" mentality, view such questions as an opportunity to present challenges to new & budding keepers. Be friendly, but quiz them on their research & turn it into a chance to learn & appreciate these animals even more. Get creative! :)

K; that has got to be the best post ever typed. Thanks for summing it up!
Another thing that I thought of.. information changes. Years back, most of us were plugging in human heatpads for heat sources. And this was acceptable! Now, we know that this is not the ideal heating situation..
