Yes, how unlikely it is or sounds like a fall from a small height like this may have caused his sudden passing, but it is still possible. You don't know, no one knows. You are not only making an accusation but an assumption. We all know what happens when you assume things, right guys?

Only an autopsy could reveal such things. They also say that you can drown from less then an inch of water. Sounds unlikely, but it is possible. So before you start accusing others of abuse or neglect think of your statements. At the time of loss it is a time for sympathy, compassion, and support to help one get over this hard point in life.

Like a couple had said, what if it was you? What if your pet died unexpectedly, and it seem like they passed from an unusual circumstance, yet someone accused you that their demise was your fault?

sevirus669: Sorry to hear about your loss. I know it is a hard thing to deal with. But don't lets this discourage you from moving on and getting another pet.

Before you quote me, maybe you should read my first post on the subject. There are still numerous other things that could have caused the demise of this snake and not the assumed fall.

I would have reason to believe that it could have been a husbandry issue. Where did you buy him from??? Did you happen to have any chemicals on your hands or fuming through the room?? What kind of substrate did you use???
Many questions here that could hold the answer other than your deduction.

I get the impression you feel like I'm somehow twisting your words, which I don't think I am. You clearly said you have reason to believe that it could have been a husbandry issue. That is why I asked you what sort of husbandry issue you think could have been the cause. You think it might have been chemical poisoning?

    Sevirus,

So sorry for your loss.... I would never have believed how much you can be attached to a BP until I got mine.

I can tell that you are the kind of person that cares deeply about your animals, and I would encourage you to open up your heart to another one when you're ready. People like you are few and far between, and I would hate for any pet to miss out on the kind of care and love you would give it. Just try to remember the good times with him, and never forget him. :)

Either way, you're in the right spot- 99% of BPnetters are great people that will be here to help if you decide to get another one, or just to talk if you need to.

    Take care,

That is one scenario. There are many others. Did the temp spike?? Was he exposed to high heat for a brief amount of time?? Was the heat regulated by a thermostat? Was there fumes from paint, cedar, or another possible toxic in the air or on the OP hands??
Like I said, I would hate for Sevirus to miss out on the opportunity to enjoy another wonderful ball python. The main thing now would be trying to rule out all the possible causes as to the demise of the first one before putting another one into the same situation and/or environment.

For MPenn: I work with food (chef) so I dont come into contact with any substances ect. that would be harmful to people or animals, plus I have a bit of an obsissive compuslive thing when it comes to hand washing.

Subturate: Aspen, what he was kept on his entire life, even before i got him.

Breeder: A friend of mine who had his 2nd ever clutch, gave me one hatchling in exchange for some work i did for him.

Sorry for the slow response, been out of town at chef conference in AZ

What source for the rodents? WAY back in the day when I was a teen, I had a nearly year-old male sinaloan who was healthy, active, growing, and thriving. Temps and everything were fine. He had been vetted and checked clear of parasites over 6 months earlier. I was out of frozen mice, so I bought him a live pet store mouse, prekilled it, and he ate it readily.
The next day he was simply dead.

To this day, I'm convinced that the pet store had retrieved an escaped rodent and tossed it back into the bin. Many pet stores set rat poison out as a matter of course, to deal with escapees. I'll never know for certain, as an autopsy wasn't affordable at the time, but that's one possible explanation. The only variable was the mouse. I've never completely trusted pet store mice since then.

sevirus, I think the vast majority of the questions are based on the desire of all the snake-lovers here to know how this horrible thing could have happened. I don't think the desire comes from a need to assign blame, but from a need to add something that makes sense to our collective knowledge. Its important information to know for everybody's snake's sake.

I do appreciate the interest in this case. Mice were live then killed from a local pet store so who knows. If anyone can find any weaknesses in my setup I would love to know what they think, before i get another Ball. I do thank everyone though for their input and appologize that i couldn't post the info you were looking for sooner.

    Re: RIP Sevirus
Its really quite a mystery. The only explanation that I can think of is that your poor little guy was already sick and just not showing it.

I wonder if BP's having something like Sudden Infant Death Syndrome? We had a kitten that seemed totally healthy die in its sleep just this year. That was at the time of the Chinese pet food poisoning so we guessed that was it. But I've seen that sort of thing before.

Perhaps it was just a freak accident or a stealthy disease.

Just one off the wall thing: does anybody else live with you that had access to him? I hate to sound like a corny detective but I would hate for you to think it was somehow your fault when it wasn't. Could it have been an accident that somebody just can't bear to tell you about?
