Lastly, as a pre-med student you are studying nothing related to snake health and wellbeing. Your studies are not pre-vet nor vet so you are unqualified to make medical decisions regarding the need for medical care or use of antibiotics for a snake. Medical doctors do not see snakes....vets do not see humans....pretty clear cut isn't it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you've just turned 20, and already 2 years pre-med? Hmm.... That doesn't mean you have anything besides some ground work in chemistry and physiology. Actually here : http://www.bestpremed.com/preMDreq.php#requirements:
The "pre-med" classes required by virtually all schools in the US are as follows:
* A year of Freshman Chemistry along with the appropriate laboratory courses
* A year of Organic Chemistry along with laboratory courses
* A year of Biology along with laboratory courses
* A year of Physics along with laboratory courses
* A year of English
* A year of Calculus or other advanced math classes, including Statistics
I don't see anything there even comparable to being in clinicals, or medical diagnosing at all.

Thank you for summing up exactly what I was feeling. After I had posted initially in this thread and saw her response to someone else (completely ignoring what I had said, as well)--I decided I was SO done with attempting to say anything to her, as she evidently has no actual interest in anything anyone here has to say.
So, thank you, Jo.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, or to anybody else that has responded to me. I don't live on this forum.
Yes, Franky, I left my parents home. I didn't take my ball python because they didn't want me to, since it's against the apartment's rules. I could have, but they would worry, and would have been very mad.
As far as cage cleaning goes, I've been to pet shops where it looks as if they clean the cage once a year, but the snakes look as if they were maintained by an enthusiast. If the snake chooses to lay around in its own feces, so be it, they should have the IQ to go in a corner, where they do not roam.
I didn't call my friend nor the reptile man I know, due to lack of time, your correct. However, I left my Mom the address of the reptile man I know, and I told her if the snake looks like she's having trouble moving or whatever, to take her down. She's never been to this pet store where he's at, and everytime I asked her if she wanted to go with me there, she's refused, because I told her it's quite smelly, and it looks like they do not clean the cages regularly. So, Franky, you're not quite on track so far.
If the snake would've died in her care, I wouldn't have had a fit. I would've said, well, you didn't let me take her with me, and this is what happened. Taking the snake to the vet was NOT the best option, as she DID have a recourse. I dumped the situation in her lap, because once again, told her, I think it's time I take the snake. She said no again. I'm not bad mouthing her on this forum...I merely stated how she took the snake to the vet and shouldn't have. And for the funds? Are you out of your mind? Of course I'm not going to pay that back. If my Mom would've told me before hand that she was taking the snake to the vet, and I agreed that was the right choice, yes, I would've paid for it.
No, I would not board the snake with someone else. What would the point be? I may of well the sell the snake. I live in an apartment, and am almost certain am going to be living here year round, taking summer courses as well, so either I have a snake here, or at home, or not one at all. I live a few hours from home, so if the cage did get pretty messy, I could come home every other week...but I was working on getting my friend down the street to clean the cage, but as of this weekend, he wasn't allowed...he doesn't know much about snakes, but owns a bearded dragon and knows how to clean the cage...I was hoping on this, but like I said, just found he couldn't because his parents didn't want him handling a snake.
As a Pre-Med student, I'm essentially studying life, the human anatomy, etc. and you'd be surprised how similar the various forms of life are. You can run out of differences far too easily before you start listing all the similarities different organisms and creatures have in common.
Since it seems like you went out of your way to make an attack, I'd like to do the same. I don't know how much you weigh, but for your own good, if your talking about health conditions here, you should apply them to your own life. Exercise, please. You make the uneducated assumption that Pre Med has nothing to do with snake health and well-being. May I ask, how far did YOU go in school? Hopefully you received a high school diploma. Exactly what do you do for a living?

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
PLEASE, If the snake survives sell it or give it to a loving home ASAP as you have no place owning or caring for an animal that requires special attention. "If the snake chooses to lay in its own feses so be it", and "they should have the IQ to go in a corner" WOW! These are just two examples to illistrate my point. I hope this isnt the attitude of our future medical profesionals or we will all die young!!!!!

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
Beach,
You are on a forum filled with people that love their snakes like a family member. You obviously have absolutely no business what so ever owning that snake and the best thing you could do for it is to find it a good home. You can't potty train a BP and I find your above comments on the snake laying in it's own feces as completely ignorant. YOU are the one that should have the brains to know what the snake needs to care for it. You are doing nothing to help the situation and I feel sorry that snake had to be bound to you as it's owner as it could have made a wonderful pet to someone else who genuinely wanted to care and bond with the snake.
YOu are ignorant, that's not attacking you, thats the opinion anybody here would form after reading your posts. I also hope that you are banned from this forum. You were warned earlier in the thread to not personally attack other forum members but you have anyway. You may not like what people have said here but to turn around and ask what a person weighs and they should go exercise is just childish and has no place here.
Good luck with your snake.

Let me tell you who made a mistake here, YOU by buying an animal in the first place, I can tell you are NOT READY for animal ownership.
Animal ownership requires to be mature, responsible, have time to devote to your animal and it’s needs and finally be able to provide financially for that animal. Obviously none of the above applies to you.
If your BP pulls through do yourself and this animal a favor re-home him.

Since you are legally an adult. You CAN make your own decisions. If you feel it's better for the snake then take it with you, although I myself doubt it's ability to thrive in your care. Find an apartment that allows pets. LOTS DO!
As for you attack on Jo, are you kidding me? :ohmygod: She very logically broke down you situation, and you come back with assumptions on her weight?!?!?! :O What does that accomplish. The 'she started it' rationale is very immature.
If it makes my post any more valid to you yes I do have a college degree. I received a BS in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Zoology. I've worked as a vet tech and I've worked with wildlife rehabilitation. Not that makes me any better than anyone else, but apparently you see a degree as a measure of intelligence. It's not... necessarily. Life has a wonderful way of teaching us any numerous lessons (whether we earn a degree or not), and you are obviously missing one here.

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
I have been following this thread from the start and haven't posted anything yet because alot of people have given some wonderful advice but I can't not say anything anymore.
BeachVibes, that post is uncalled for here, and I am sure that everyone agrees. Frankykeno was just trying to get you to see what everyone else on this forum obviously sees and apparently you just can't get. And I CANNOT believe that you posted on a forum full of BP lovers that if your snake decides to sleep in its own wastes so be it. That it should know better and to go in the corner. That is utterly rediculous, and this is coming from a premed student. You have no business owning a snake IMO, or any other animal. And I can't believe that you wouldn't even consider doing the right thing and having someone take in your snake temporarily while you are away, someone who will clean its cage, handle it so it stays used to being handled, etc. etc. And your "Reptile Friend" who is in the pet store where they don't look like they clean the cages regularly, that friend obviously doesn;t have the knowledge to diagnose and treat your snake. If they can't even take care of the basic husbandry of snakes in their care at the petstore, how is he going to treat your snake, and why would you trust a petstore that runs like that???? Why anyone would seek help from a reptile section in the majority of petstores in the first place is beyond me, but to seek their help and look to what they say over a herp. vet is unfathomable. Your poor snake needs veterinary care and your mom needs to be thanked and commended for trying to do that. Your snake really, IMO, needs to be better taken care of, using a UTH with no thermostat, allowing it to sleep in its own wastes if it wants to, that is shameful. With you being gone and your mom not wanting to touch the snake, who is going to treat your snake for it's injury?? Are you just going to let it suffer and say well it should have had the IQ to move away so it didn't get burned ? Are you going to let your mom drive this snake around to someone who will actually touch it to treat it?? Or are you just hoping that it will get better eventually on its own without anyone's help?
And there are similarities between living things, but what differences there are are major. Not even a regular vet is qualified enough to treat a snake, you would have to see a herp vet, someone that has studied and had experience with reptiles, to get a proper diagnosis.
All I can say is that I feel for your poor snake and your mom...they both deserve better...........

No they are only "enthusiastic" about making some money. Hopefully you have the IQ to know the difference however it seems perhaps you do not. The understanding and concepts available to a human brain are not present in the reptilian brain (your medical studies will at some point cover some of this as the human brain also includes a base reptilian type function). Snakes therefore are not capable of the type of decisions humans are capable of.

Oh I'm on a track, child, and it appears to be quite a nasty, smelly track. So your "expert" keeps a pet store so dirty and smelly your mother has the good sense to refuse to go there. This is your "expert" that you would prefer see your snake over a qualified herp vet? How terribly sad for that snake!

So you will allow this snake to lay about in it's own waste products until you perhaps have time a couple of times per month to deal with it? Allowing any living creature to be housed in such a manner as it's environment becomes fouled with excessive feces and urine due to the neglect of the owner is a chargeable offense under animal protection laws. As far as selling this snake...good luck finding anyone that would be stupid enough to pay you for a snake that is now ill due to neglect and poor care. Find a rescue or a responsible, experienced and caring owner - it's that snake's best bet.
Quote:
As a Pre-Med student.....
Yes, yes we've got how terribly impressed you are with yourself, however, again, you are pre-med not pre-vet. How about the next time you are ill you go see the local vet...or better yet that nice friend of yours with the nasty, smelly pet store! :)
As far as the rest of your post, it continues to show your lack of maturity and lack of common sense and respect for others, including in this case your own pet.

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
I skimmed some of the replies to me, and let me ask you all something. Why do you all own a snake? What's the point? You all act like it needs more and better care than a Golden Retriever. Let me tell you, it DOESN'T. No matter how much you clean its cage or supply the "perfect living environment," it's not going to show any affection towards you or become friendlier. No matter how much you tell yourselves, your ball pythons do not like you. They are not companions.
Ball pythons are even known to thrive in periods of neglect. I'm not saying neglect is good, but if it has to happen, ball pythons can maintain quite well. And for your information, mine has under fine conditions.
As for the thermostat, my friend who sold it to me, said you didn't need it...he said keep the U.T.H. under the tank, and use two sheets of newspaper as substrate, provide a hide on the hot side, and a water dish on the cool side, and you will be fine...this coming from a 19 year old kid who owns over 100 snakes, has his own snake room, and has even had at one point, a King Cobra.
Someone posted how their snake is attacking tongs like prey. A lot of snakes lay in their own feces. They are dumb as nails. Now you might say, well, why did you ever get a snake in the first place? Well, if you read one of my prior posts in this thread, I always wanted a reptile, and through a friend, decided against a leopard gecko and went with a ball python. I think she is a very cool animal, but to all you people on this forum, I hope you grow up. Snakes need care, but NOT half of what everyone here is preaching. I hope to who ever has kids on these forums, they are treated as nicely and as well as you treat your little ball pythons.

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
Well, I have an update on the situation. I just off the phone with my parents. My Mom was crying earlier because she and my Dad went to the vet, and my Dad had no idea (she never told him)...and when he heard it was $220, flipped. The vet still wanted to keep it longer, but thanfully my parents got her out immediately...and did what I wanted my Mom to do in the first place...took her to the pet store where they are essentially reptile experts.
They guy took her in, like I imagined, and did so without any charge what so ever, he said we'll watch her here, and get her better. He said it's not nearly as bad of a burn as the vet, or my Mom had thought. He said he's against U.T.H. and recommends if you do use one, to go to Home Depot and put tiles down under the substrate. He recommends heat from above, CHE.
-
Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
Quote:
Well anyway, I don't see how it can be a burn, because we've had the same setup for 3 months no problem (although I have been helping her shed...taking off areas she couldn't)...it's a 10 gallon glass aquarium, I used to sheets of newspaper, and a UTH...and a rock that is on the cool side (not heat rock) just regular rock...
Quote:
No kidding she hasn't seen any improvements! It couldn't have been a burn, I've used the exact same substrate, heating source, yada yada, and this wouldn't all of a sudden happen (although some of you may argue, the temps/etc. may fluctuate, but are house temperatures remain the same give or take one degree). So it's obviously either a scale rot or something else, and thank the Lord my Mom is picking her up tomorrow, and is going to take her straight to the person she should'vetaken her to in the first place.
What happened to your claim that it couldn't possibly be a burn? I guess we really have no idea what we're talking about. :ohmygod:

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
I haven't posted in this thread up until now, because you have had great advice given to you by experienced snake keepers, some of which have learned lessons the hard way. You obviously have no intention of becoming a responsible reptile keeper youself, for which I feel very sorry as you will undoubtedly continue to keep your current snake, and any replacement animals in sub-par conditions. If you want a BP that lives to be anywhere near 50, you should start listening to those who have decades of snake-years of experience under their belt.
I, like many other members here, keep snakes for the enjoyment of seeing them display natural behaviors, grow and breed, among other things. Can this be done in conditions that are not ideal? Yes they can, but why would you give an animal in your care anything less than what the herp community knows and agrees to be the best environment to avoid potential injury, and ensure optimal health. If you are not prepared to give your animal these conditions, including proper veterinary care, then you will never be a responsible snake keeper, plain and simple.
I hope you will correct not only your husbandry according to the tried and true methods described all over this forum, but also your attitude toward those who have had the concern for your charge in mind in this post. If you are not humble enough to take advice, you will struggle with many things in life, not only snake keeping. When you move onto your next passing fancy (or before), please find a good home for your snake rather than leave it in it's own filth for months because it's just a dumb snake.

Yeah I do have a pet rock I keep in my snakes enclosure, it's the heated kind, I put it there so my snake could get a good sun burn.
Robin, go back into your hide with your little snakes or what ever it is you have, in your little podunk residence.

Ahh so the solution was to dump your problem off on the pet store you yourself describe as I bolded above? Lovely...well there's a snake that's destined to do really well.
End of my participation in this thread. It's absolutely pointless to attempt to educate someone who refuses knowledge or believes himself, with no actual experience, to already know all he needs to know. I'll just content myself with our 21 perfectly healthy, burn and belly rot free snakes that I am fully aware don't know me from a block of wood. That knowledge however doesn't free me from the responsibility of caring about them. :)

My snakes are members of my family, as are my dogs, my cats, and my birds. I have them because I hold a great interest in them and I love and care for them as I do all my animals. All my animals get the best care possible, CLEAN living areas, good food, LOVE, ATTENTION, fresh water every day, and visits to the VET when needed and necessary (checkups, shots, whatever is routinely required and for whatever issues may pop up along the way), required husbandry/correct housing, etc. etc. etc. This goes for all my animals which are taken care of as well as my kids are taken care of. My snakes get as good care as my dogs which get as good care as my kids. And you know what, even though my snakes may not ever show an ounce of affection or love or appreciation....whatever....I am happy to know that they are happy and well taken care of, that they are healthy and that I can provide them with comfortable homes where they will not have to stress or live in a stinky cage or have to sleep in their own wastes.
Quote:

If it was in such "fine conditions" it would not have been burnt and we would not be discussing all this in this thread now would we????

Well obviously you did need a thermostat because otherwise your BP would not have gotten burned, and would not be suffering in your hands. There have been many knowledgeable people on this site that have told you what you needed to do for your snake, many who have themselves probably been keeping snakes longer than your friend has been alive. And a King Cobra has nothing to do with owning a BP.
I will say again that your snake deserves better, someone who will give it the attention and care that it needs and deserves. Someone who will take it to a qualified herp vet when necessary, as that is what it needs right now. It needs treatment in a clean environment, not stuck in the backroom of some dirty petstore to be treated by someone that can't even correctly keep clean environments for snakes that they are trying to sell. Such a shame!! They may be just ball pythons or just snakes like you seem to want to strongly imply, but to the majority of us on this site, they are also loved, special family members. They are living creatures to be respected and taken care of with the best care possible. They are each unique, with their own personalities, that bring joy to many of us here.

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
Unfortunately, this thread has done nothing but make every member of BP.net cringe and feel absolutely terrible for this person's mother and snake. I think other members, like myself, feel like banging our heads against a wall after reading some of the things this person has posted.
What makes BP.net so fantastic, is that it's a great resource for beginner-level people to learn what they need to know in order to keep their reptiles happy and healthy. We have members who keep hundreds (or thousands!) of snakes and other reptiles, who are willing to answer questions and give advice. We often have people come to the site looking for help (as this person indicated she was doing with "Help! Burn or Scale Rot?" as the title of her post). Many of the people who come looking for help actually are and take into consideration what the members of this site have to say. Many beginners are actually grateful for the advice, because it helps keep their pets healthy.
When someone comes asking for help, then throws that help back in the faces of those who offered it, it infuriates me. Everything this person has said has indicated that she doesn't care about her snake enough to ensure that it has a correct living environment. Doing the bare minimum isn't enough. Researching before you buy your animal to make sure you are capable of caring for it is key--not everyone does this. But many who don't are still willing to listen to advice--this person isn't.
It's a sad circumstance that this person owns any animal. I hope that when she decides that she's no longer interested, the snake gets rehomed somewhere that it's going to be cared for properly.
So please, hon: Grow up. Get a clue. Try and research before you jump into something you're not prepared for. Have some respect for other human beings and for your pets.

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
My only input to this is... After all the personal jests made at people here and the overall viciousness that this thread has gotten to... Why hasn't someone just banned beachvibesbyeff yet as this just isn't constructive.
He's been given great advice he failed to take, I doubt he'll take it in the future because apparently a degree makes you smarter - that's BS... I have one and there was only *ONE* class in my entire 4 year double honours university that actually taught me anything - ONE class. Schooling doesn't qualify you as a better person BTW.
Secondly, there have been other arguments around here, but they don't resort to speculation about member's weights, or about their IQ or education level, and the certainly don't tell other members to go find a hide cave.
Third, I'm totally playing the Mom today, but if you're not going to be constructive and considerate of others then just get it out... People seem to like chilling out here and spending their free time chatting - they don't need to be insulted by someone unwilling to care for their animal who obviously doesn't want the help anyway.

Hon, if I remember my Mod days since Beach is now at a "reptile dysfunction" level that means they are in moderated status which basically means nothing they post can appear until it's been read over by a Mod or Admin for abusive language, inappropriate content, etc. Banning isn't something this forum does unless push really comes to shove and that's how it should be.
As far as the personal insults directed my way, it's no big deal to me. I've been called far worse by far better people LOL. This is a very young person, hell I have a daughter this age though she's been taught far better manners, so although it's unacceptable public behaviour there's an allowance in my mind that perhaps this is just age speaking without any real wisdom to guide it.
If nothing else, perhaps this thread will serve to show our newer members all the things one should NOT do when entrusted with the wellbeing of any living creature. :)

I agree, Beachvibesbyeff should be banned. Not only is he rude to people on this forum, and not only is he disrespecting him own mother, and not only is he refusing advice from others, but he's not taking proper care of HIS snake. IMHO, This attitude he is showing makes me sick. I vote for :banned1:

Robin, go back into your hide with your little snakes or what ever it is you have, in your little podunk residence.
lol, i decided to join because this thread never ceases to entertain me. beach, if you do seriously have a heated rock in the enclosure, that is most certain the reason your snake got burnt.
otherwise, beach, i'm not going to tell you what everyone else is saying - i can see where you are coming from, you came here for information as to if your ball is burnt or has scale rot, and it seems it's turned into an online fist fight. you obviously do have some sort of care and respect for your snake or you wouldn't have bought it nor came here to seek advice, so don't let other members here tell you that you have no sympathy, and like posted, you should own a pet rock, that's childish and retarded.
i hope your snake recovers well in the care of your reptile expert...it sounds like he knows what he's doing. let us know how things turn out.

lol, i decided to join because this thread never ceases to entertain. beach, if you do seriously have a heat rock, that's the problem, and that's why snake got burnt.
but anyway, beach, i see where you are coming from. you obviously do have some compasion and a heart for your snake, otherwise you wouldn't have bought one nor came here for advice. you came here for a health condition question, and members insulted your caretaking - that's childish on their part. i own three ball pythons myself, but i use the ceramic heat emitters from the top, like your reptile man mentioned.
anyway, i hope your snake recovers fine in their pet shop, it sounds like the guy knows his snakes. let us know how it goes.

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
Did the double-post get re-added to the thread? Had she tried to delete the post after making it? I missed that the first time around. Anyway--it's amusing that she posted twice--especially since they're essentially the same but not identical. Interesting. I'm just glad that she finally managed to get herself banned. Ban-land is where she belongs.

The first post was waiting to be approved in the moderated que. Once it was approved, it showed up. Your mind isn't playing tricks on you.

Thanks for clearing it up, Robin ;) Wow...she really was pretty dense--and once she was in moderated status, there was no "oops! I posted this on the wrong alias" reaction to be had. I loves me some Admins and Moderators.

Re: Help! Burn or Scale Rot?
I just spent the last 20-30 minutes reading through this and some of the things he said, absolutely were mind baffling. I know he is now banned (possibly reading) but I just wanted to say/ask a few things that were on my mind, although not expecting a response.
First, ok so let's say the snake is not taken to the vet and is positively diagnosed by your "knowledgable friend" who claims that 2 layers of newspaper, a water bowl, and a SINGLE hide on the warm side is sufficient, what then? Does he have the means/antibiotics in order to bring the snake back to health? Any way to help a sick animal besides time costs MONEY that is something one has to understand when taking on the responsibility of owning any pet. Which brings me to my next point
How on EARTH could you be mad at your mother? Not only mad, but bursting out at her about doing the right thing? I live in an apartment in which I am not allowed to have anything over than 5g tank and fish only. I have a 20g tank with a ball python. It is YOUR pet, YOU take care of it, no matter how pissed off your mom is about you doing it. When you decide to succumb to your mom's pleadings to leave the snake at home, it is no longer YOUR responsibility, but it is hers. Therefore, as a mature adult, she did the right thing by taking it to the vet as she did not know of any other way to make your snake better.
Guess what? You need a reality check and need to grow up. You come to this forum that has many breeders/enthusiastics who are willing to take time out of their busy schedule to answer your questions. When you argue with every single person who posts advice, your reason for being here is pointless. Bring almost any question here and you will get as best a response as people can give. Unfortunately you do not care about the well-being of your pet enough to take care of it yourself. If it meant so much, it should've been with you, that's the bottom line. I'm glad you got what you deserved and hope you received an IP ban so you cannot come back and make yourself look more childish than you already are.
Sorry for the huge rant guys, but I just needed to get those things off my chest even though they've already been spoken.
