Something that has a floor space that is 3-4x as long as your heat pad.

For example, if your heat pad is 12x12", a tub that is about 36x18" would be appropriate.

I'd use a medium sized tub, something similar to a sterilite 32 qt clear view it measures 6-3/8Hx16-1/4Wx23-1/2L http://www.nextag.com/sterilite-32-qt/search-html . My young snake is currently in a 12 qt sterilite (12qt has a little more floor space than the 15). You don't have to put the entire heat pad under the tub. If you put the tub where you can leave part of the heat pad exposed you should do ok with a smaller tub. This will save you from buying too large a tub for your snakes size, and from buying another UTH. I have an 1/8 in aluminum screen that I adhered my heat pad to so that I can move it to adjust appropriately.

If you put the UTH under 1/3 of the tub, the thermostat all the way up and you still don't achieve the correct temps, then move the pad under the tub more until you can achieve proper temps.

As far as the holes go, I had to put more holes than I thought. This was to keep the humidity down. I was getting condensation throughout my tub with like 99% + humidity, and that is just as bad as improper temps. Start with fewer holes, and continue to adjust. Allow time for the temps and humidity to stabilize before making any adjustments.

If you don't have a thermostat, and you don't have a lot of $$ you can try this one http://www.reptilesupply.com/product.php?products_id=75 for $20 plus shipping. I know it's not a great one, but it's better than nothing at all.

    Hope this helps :)

thanks a lot, I'm fine on the $$$ situation, i have a lot saved...and i already have a Ranco t-stat controlling my UTH...

I switched from a glass tank to a tub when we lived in Tucson, AZ....you just about can't get much drier than that! But when I got the tub going, I actually had to work to keep the humidity LOW enough. (Melted more holes, and always have to make sure the water bowl is not on top of the heat source.) Yeah...they're THAT good. :P

That would be a good "in between" size tub...if you have a male, you might be able to get away with that one into adulthood, but an adult female needs a tub at least 36" in length.

The only problem with heavy hides in plastic tubs is that they tend to shift around a lot and take the rest of the cage furnishings with it.

Honestly, those black plastic reptile caves are probably the best for rack systems.

As far as decor, using those long fake vines would provide more aesthetic cover, but really the decorations are more for you - the snake could care less.

so I'd be able to fit one of those hides on each side and a water bowl in the middle?
