I have 3 cats all of which are outside cats at my girlfriend's but people in her neighborhood love cats. Our 3 RARELY poke their heads out from her yard

Each BB is 6mm in diameter. And yes, obviously the paintball gun would cause more damage; I acknowledge that. ;)

Just a side discussion, nothing more... none of us is going to go out and shoot a cat after this... at least I'm not.

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
The fact that this thread has gone on for 6 pages really disturbs me.
There is no ifs ands or buts, comparing bb's or paintball guns or letting dogs loose
JUST FRIGGIN CALL ANIMAL CONTROL!!!!!
Let me tell you how it will go down if you shoot the cats with anything or let your dog on them ( besides from not being the right thing to do )
You will end up being the one getting the visit from animal control and the one who gets in trouble.
Just do the right thing.
I own a cat and 8 cats running in my yard and house would drive me over the edge, so I feel for you.
It's funny, people on here will freak out if some burm or retic eats it's owner and the police hit it with a stun gun but will go on for several pages about doing inhumane things to a cat, I just don't get it.
Can someone please explain it to me?

The comparison of airsoft guns against paintball guns was just that: a comparison. We were not discussing which one would hurt a cat more (just that a paintball gun would cause more damage to a target) or that you should use one on a cat.

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
The topic heading in general is crazy. Not just going after the air gun/paintball thing. That was minor in comparison.
Would a paintball kill a cat ? sound crazy to you ? Does to me .
-
Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
I have called Animal Control many, many times, but again there is nothing they can or will do. Maybe it is different in other states, I have also spoken with some of the owners of these cats and they know when they see me walking around with my Havahart trap that I am not joking, they just don't seem to care.

That is so sad. I can't understand people who have animals and don't want to take care of them.
Your state has no leash laws?

We do but it doesn't apply to cats.

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
Well you live in Mass. so you could always dress them up in Yankees uniforms and let the 'Sox fans take care of them.
( just kidding, trying to add a little humor to a bad subject )

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
wow... okay i just read this thread and here's my story.
we have outdoor cats. when i moved into this neighbourhood i went to each new neighbour and informed them that i train my cats with water. i use a squirt bottle and i shoot some water at them when they are doing something wrong. like jumping up on the critter cages, counters, table, scratching the furniture (you get the idea).
i suggested to my new neighbours that if my cats come into their yard and they don't want them there... to spray them. it won't take long for my cats to know where they can and cannot go.
this has worked so well that one of my neighbours, who reallllly hates all animals but especially cats said to us, "you can see them... walk the perimeter of my yard like they know if they stay on the property line they won't get sprayed... then never come beyond it" LOL
other neighbours said, "spray them with water? no way... that's horrible" and then a year later complained when my cats were in their yard harrassing the fish in their pond or the birds at their feeder. i again told them... spray them with water (even offered to buy the squirt bottle) - if you are in the yard... take the hose to them. it won't take twice to have them never return.
they did it,... and they've never been back.
it's not about whether they are indoors or outdoors. it's whether or not you take the time to train them... just like you would a dog.
:sweeet:

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
now one more story:
when we moved in here... the old owner had moved across town (very small town so this is about 8 blocks away) and her cat would come to our house and come in the cat door - come upstairs and pee in our dining room cause he was mad there were new cats in HIS house.
we closed the cat door... got a squirt bottle and when he came into the yard... sprayed him.
he's never been back. took a few times... but he learned.
so.... any cat can learn to stay away using water... cause it's rare to find a cat who liked to get sprayed.

amen. Not that I am condoning your neighbors actions but I think in the right neighbor hood there is nothing wrong with one or two outdoor cats.
I have three cats, two of which spend alot of time outdoors. Let me tell you why, neither one will use a cat box and if I were to take them to the shelter they would be put down.
That being said, they are both fixed, can come in and out of the garage as they please, and are loved by my neighbors (two of which have asked us if they were ours because they wanted to adopt them lol)
Now I would be upset by 8 un-fixed cats cats too. I think trapping and taking them to a shelter is probably your best bet. Just make sure the traps are on YOUR property. No one could fault you for taking cats off your own property to the shelter.
Edit: I like her ^^^ idea very much too. Although if the cats are not fixed and probably not current on shots, might be better to get them to the humane society where they will either get better homes or be humanely put down.

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
Well, I didn't think the topic line was too outrageous.
I don't want to do something that could end up killing them.
I am calling animal control on Monday. 5 of the little ^#%$ were on my back patio tonight. I tried spraying with the bottle I use for the cages. Just got a hiss and arched backs. Only one ran. I had to chase them off the property.
The neighbors who "own" these cats will not bring them into their house. They let them run all over. The sad part is they are only in their yard when the food is out. I talked to my other neighbor on the side of me and he almost hit them backing out of his garage. They were laying in his driveway. He is sick of them as well. Evidently his wife left some clothes in a basket this Summer on the back porch to hang on the clothesline, went inside and talked to someone on the phone. When she came back out, the cats were in the clothes and "marked" their territory on them.

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
water will work pepper should work too if they are eating thigns but talk to your neijbor or call animal controll. They need to do somthing before the pet explosion reaches the point it had in wisconsin where they leaglized the hunting of feral cats because they had over a millon running rampat in the state.

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?

People can lose eyes and other things by being hit in bad spots with a paintball gun.... you are telling me losing an eye isn't a serious injury to a cat? What about internal bleeding?
What exactly do you consider a serious injury.. have you ever been hit by a paintball? Ive been hit by one at 50 feet and it broke blood vessels and made a bruise the size of my fist....
I really don't get your response :)
-
Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
First off of course do not shoot anything at them. Just because the people that own these cats are heartless idiots doesn't give you the right to be one too.
These animals need dealt with so personally I'd take photo's or video of them on your property as evidence, call Animal Control and find out what the law is for your area about the number of pets allowed per property (8 may well exceed that), specific laws about wandering unfixed cats and so forth. If Animal Control will not respond, try a feline rescue or if all else fails send a letter to your neighbour that you will use a live, humane trap if the cats are on your property and turn them over to the proper authority to be dealt with. If none of these cats are being cared for properly, are unfixed and likely have not had any shots, are allowed to breed uncontrolled, are aggressive to humans and all over your property then they are feral and need to be dealt with as such. It is far more humane in the end for them to be put down than live the way they are living.
Do watch yourself that you don't get scratched or bitten. You can get very sick from that sort of thing with a free roaming, unvaccinated cat.

I am shocked this question even needed to be asked.

Why should I have to train someone else's cat to not come in my property? It's the responsability of the owner to keep their cat in their property.
If the cat was kept inside there wouldn't be a problem with it going over to other people's yards, killing birds, getting hit by a car, bite by another cat, over populating the world with even more cats, attacked by dogs, ect, ect.
-
Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
you can't train a cat to stay in the yard..............they're cats. people should leave they're cats in the house.......this situation stinks for you, but having them humanely PTS. is the best way............trust me, if you have cats around your house now, wait till they start reproducing out there, you'll never get rid of them................NO Paintballs!
and i worked at the humane society for two years...........100% wild cats were PTS! No other way to deal with them........way to expensive to treat them, and they have all kinds of bad diseases..........Very Sad!

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
If a stray cat is in our yard causing problems, I'm not going to keep the dogs in where they tear up the windows. I'll let them out to chase the cat away. Although I find shooting them inhumane, if the problem is serious enough it may seem like the only way but please do not make them suffer what ever you choose.
I wish you luck with those strays!!
-
Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
If your dogs are tearing up the windows then they aren't that well trained.
And shooting them is far less inhumane then letting them be torn up by two dogs.

Any lab X weinerimer(sp?) cross that is a couple years old and doesn't go crazy over an animal in the yard must be sick

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
Trouble arises when people try to take the law into their own hands. Let's say you get caught by a neighbor shooting at the cats.. not only would your local reputation be turned into a cruel cat-murderer, but also the news media loves to latch onto these things and would make you the hugest villain ever. There was a woman in Buffalo a few weeks ago, who poisoned her neighbor's barking dog and was convicted, and she is barred now from owning any pets and has to perform community service; she got lucky and was not given a jail term. Her name and face were plastered all over the nightly news, and her address was plain as day on the news also.. think about if something like this happened to you. You would lose your snakes and anything else.. not to mention it is cruel to begin with, even if there weren't civil consequences. I don't want to see you on the next episode of Cops.. :)
Now, I am 100% with you that cats should not be outdoor pets. Cars are big and move fast and crush things.. cats are small. That alone is enough reasoning for me. Coyotes, foxes.. mischevous kids.. why expose a loved pet to that stuff? I myself only have one neutered male cat, and he is 100% indoor-only.
-
Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
Agree Jen 100%. I've done a few things I regret and shooting at a cat is one of them for sure. Cats are gods creatures too, as much as I hate them I must remember that. Dogs are our protectors from feral around here. Gotta love the canines!!
-
Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
No Jake, the dog is not trained. Simple as that.
And Jen does make some very good points.

agreed
I have 2 male neutered cats that have only been outside while in a carrier on the way to the vet.

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
I think that if someone's stray cat happens to enter a yard where someone's dog is fenced in.. and the dog goes after that cat.. it is not the dog owner's fault. The cat is trespassing, and the only way to prevent that would be to safely confine the cat to a house, or maybe a completely fenced-in outdoor dog-kennel type enclosure that's fenced on all sides but the floor. I actually saw a house where they had a large side porch completely screened in and there were a bunch of cats playing in there; they either did a cat rescue, or just enjoyed having lots of cats. :)
What would happen if I let my horses roam free without fences? lol.. horrible things.. so why is it OK to let a cat, dog, wombat or kangaroo pet roam free?
-
Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
Its one thing for an outside dog to attack a cat. It's quite another to set a dog on a cat.
My three are 100% indoor cats. They'd be dead in minutes if they were outside around here.
My parents back in IN have some barn cats. They were dumped and quite honestly HATE being inside. So my father set up shelter in the barn and they feed them and are slowly getting them neutered and spayed.
However a huge difference for my parents is that they live in the country, not town.

How do you train a dog not to bark at or go crazy when a cat is in the dog's yard? My dog has been to obedience training and did great, but I don't recall the day they trained her not to bark at intruding cats! She barks at people passing by, other dogs, cats, crows, squirrels, the wind, etc, but that is her job in the house, and I depend on her barking so I know if something is going on outside.

That dog being a hunting dog is making you look even worse when you say he goes crazy in the house when he sees a cat outside. My dad has used dozens of dogs over the years to hunt and every one of them was trained to bark at people and no animals except while outside. It is possible to train them, you just have not. Any good trainer can do it, find one.

i have been hit by paintballs and the worst i ever got was a ping-pong ball size bruise

Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
I took this part of the conversation to PMs so as not to clutter up SPJs thread more so.
BD1, it is quite possible to have a dog that is well trained. One that 'goes crazy' and barks at everything is not. If you want to continue this please take it to PMs as we are getting very very off topic.

my husband plays professional level paintball in tournaments around the southeast. believe me, a paintball can cause some pretty nasty injuries. all it takes is one, at the right angle--and this is on grown men wearing the proper protection and equipment. so seriously people--just don't.

Actually dear I do have "years of experience" with hunting dogs having two uncles that bred and trained and generally had a long waiting list to sell various dog breeds specific to certain hunting needs. None of their dogs were allowed to get away with "going crazy" over any animal in the yard. Each dog was trained specifically to react in a certain manner to the animal being hunted based on their breed and it's natural instinct.
Bird dogs to go to point only on birds, retreivers to sit still and quiet until released to do the retreival of water birds, hounds to scent, follow and not savage downed deer and so forth. Each dog was a beautiful animal, well trained and under control at all times. Any dog that chased cats, rabbits or whatever was soon trained out of that undisciplined habit. Hunting breeds are one of the best and easiest of dogs to train as they have a natural affinity with humans and a need to work with you and respond to good training.
A Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner cross is not a recognized hunting breed. It is a cross between two sporting breeds and having kept Labs for years they can be hard to handle as younger dogs being quite hyper as are the lovely "grey ghosts". Sounds like your dog's instinct to hunt needs direction from a responsible party to avoid problems with other animals. I know our boxer/lab cross wants to chase the feral cats in our neighbourhood but a good sharp tug on her Gentle Leader halter and a firm "NO" is getting the point across that cats are not a prey item nor do I wish them hunted by her.

i believe u, im in no way saying he should ever attempt to shoot the cats, im just stating my opinion on what would happen to the cats
-
Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
Why was this question even asked? We are obviously a group of animal lovers on this site..Harming any animals for doing what comes naturally to them is wrong, the cats do not know that they are being a nusiance, they are just being cats......If you have a stray cat problem, call animal control.
-
Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
I'll say this...and then lock this poor thread because it's been beat to death quite enough.
The original question wasn't: "I wanna shoot these cats with a paint gun...what do y'all think?" ....it was "I don't want to hurt the cats, but this is all I can think of...what else can I do?" The original poster does not want to hurt the cats...he just didn't word his thread title very well.
Everyone agrees that paintballs is not the way to go. Animal control or a garden hose. 'Nuff said. :P
