Re: What gender are you?
I'm definitely female! my house is atypical in that my hubby barely tolerates my snakes, and hates my rats. Must be that old southern farm-boy upbringing! Although I must say, he's come a LONG way from "the only good snake is a dead snake" mentality. He's still reluctant to tell anyone that his wife has snakes & rats. (But he LOVES his monitors - go figure)

OMG!! I can certainly relate. My husband barely tolerates my snakes, and HATES my rats. Of course he's not overly fond of the plethora of other critters inhabiting the house, but he's responsible for bring a couple of them in.
I'm usually the entertainment at his work functions, and spend a lot of the time answering questions. I usually get the "You have how many... of wha??" question many times. lol. Of course that's if they're actually brave enough to continue the conversation with me.

Re: What gender are you?
These have been fun to read.
All female here too. Most people who know me either stay clear of me or are too curious and can't help but look.
I love the looks I get when people find out I have snakes (a whole whopping 2 ) but when I tell them I have over 100 tarantulas and scorpions THAT'S when the real looks begin.
I've had people ask me "so...do you let the spiders have the run of the house?"
and I tall them "only when we leave and at night after we go to bed. "
Not really, but hey, if they're dingy enough to ask, then they're dingy enough to believe me. ;)
I still think the single best reactions are when I tell them that the majority of our inverts and the snakes are in my bedroom and that "I sleep soooo peacefull being surrounded by *nature* LOL
-
Re: What gender are you?
Female here. I'm a big animal nut. Snakes, dogs, tarantulas just to name a few. Even though my husband says he loves them all and tolerates my zoo at home, he still looks at me as if I've gone mad when I bring another one home. :rolleye2: But hey, he knew what he was getting himself into!

Keep it goin' for the lads :D

Re: What gender are you?
This is my first message board with more males than females posting! Is that to say that snakes bring more men to the internet? It's very interesting that you'd mention this!
(I'm a chick in case the Av didn't convey that :D LOL)

Re: What gender are you?
This is the first forum I've been on with a near-even split. I've only been on gaming forums (heavily male), parenting forums (almost ALL female), and atheism/secular forums (mostly male). This forum has the best gender mix I've seen.

Re: What gender are you?
0.1.0 here. It's good to see we have a strong, stable female population going on here. Keep it up ladies!

Actually no, think I should? :P
I always test in the absolute middle as far as online mental gender quizzes. According to the intarwebs, I'm androgynous I guess. :confuse:

Re: What gender are you?
I have found in the years of playing with reptiles and owning them there are more men that fear snakes than women. any one else seeing this or have i been living in places that have sissy boys?
-
Re: What gender are you?
I don't know.. I have met so many people of both sexes that fear snakes.. my dad's big, tough friend is Terrified of them.. he came over and would not even go into the same room as them.. but this was after almost shooting his hand off with a pistol (not saying he is the brightest bulb in the light-department..)

Of course women don't generally fear snakes ;) It's not natural :D
ETA: I'm kidding...also the lady that freaked out at petsmart about a small ball around her owners neck was a woman and was definitely scared of the snake... I LMAO when she about ran into the reptile enclosure backing away from our snakes (mine was in a tupperware box) she's like I...I...I can't do snakes  ..>LOL

Re: What gender are you?
I find that when men are afraid of snakes its normally a real fear. I've noticed that with some women that are afraid of snakes that they are afraid probably because they are 'supposed' to. I know that probably came out wrong, but think about it. When you watched cartoons as a kid, didn't the mother get up on a chair and shout if she saw a reptile or rodent in her house. Then the father would come along and get rid of it. When I talk to my girl friends about Zim, most get all afraid and say they are not coming over to my house. My guy friends normally think its pretty cool. Two of my girl friends have liked Zim though and thought he was neat. My brother, however, is terrified, and won't even go near the cage.

yeah, I feel you... women are socialized to be freaked out by reptiles and rodents I think... :colbert: whereas when a man says he's scared (since he's socialized to be a big brave man) he's actually scared... that makes great sense, good observation IMO JB!

Re: What gender are you?
I'm always looking into gender roles and such. My mother says I'd do great in psychology.
People in general tend to view the snake as an evil thing. My friend's father is a prime example. When my friend wanted to keep a snake at her house for a friend, she decided to bring the subject up to her father first. He went balistic. He kept going on and on about how snakes are evil and they are cursed by god. He didn't want that evil in his house, since snakes are from the devil.
When she told me this, I actually started to laugh. It was the most obsurd thing I had ever heard come out of someones mouth.

Aww yes, the serpent that caused Eve to ruin life in Eden... Speaking of feminism and Eve... I heard recently (from my sister who's a women and gender study student at State) that the pomegranate was possibly the fruit that Eve ate that was forbidden, and it was forbidden because of some kind of birth control effects in the pomegranate  and that's why she was punished... so many interesting theories that I only half listen to as we're smokin' in the living room :D
Psychology is fun, but a BA in it won't get you far :D even with minors in Crim and Sociology (another sub you'd likely excel in)... you and me could have some great discussions I think :sunny:
-
Re: What gender are you?
I'm always up for a discussion. Strange that they would name the pomegranate. I love that stuff, and its good for you too. :carrot:
My mom thought I'd go into forensics, but I can't do dead bodies.
-
Re: What gender are you?
Well that was just a theory of one of her fav professor... forensics is fun, but I think I like it best on TV... I don't think it'd be exciting at all nor would it be glamorous... like being a receptionist is though ? :D

Re: What gender are you?
I had a positive influence as a kid, regarding snakes. My dad's boss was (and is) an animal lover, and we were out at her farm.. she talked about how gardening outside in bare feet did not bother her, and when she saw snakes, she would thank them for eating all of the mice and rats around, and let them just go by without any hassle.. I definately think that early influences matter most. You see parents at the zoo, looking at the snakes with their kids and saying "eeew!" and of course, the kid will probably pick up on that..
-
Re: What gender are you?
it's funny, people nowadays say to never judge someone by their looks.unfortunately they dont do the same thing with animals.they find out 1 snake is venomous and suddenly they're all venomous. actually while working at petco yesterday i met this girl and she said she LOVES ball pythons. i havent heard a girl around here say that since i started snake keeping.
-
Re: What gender are you?
Aaaaaaaall girl here. :D
I grew up on a farm, and wasn't taught to fear snakes. We'd always find the skinny, fast garter snakes fascinating, and were taught VERY early on how to watch and listen for rattlers.
Most (if not all) fears are learned at a very early age. It's been proven over and over again in early child behaviour studies that babies learn fears from their caregivers. If Mom panics after Junior falls off the trike, then Jr. learns to scream more even if he isn't hurt. Babies have no fear of "falling" when crossing a glass cover over stairs to Mom on the other side, if Mom encourages the crawling. It's when Mom is fearful, that baby won't crawl, even if the glass (being solid and stable) is okay.
< I had an image here of the stairs and mom/baby study but it didn't save and xfer  >
I grew up lucky in that even w/my mom HATING mice, others in the family thought it was no big deal. I don't fear or dislike snakes, spiders or other inverts, but things like roaches gross me out b/c of disease spread. :bleh:
I just don't find pet roaches or 'pedes of any interest.

Re: What gender are you?
Everything else posted in this thread is rather interesting, but I can't come up with any thoughts, haha. So, I'll just leave my plain ol' "female" answer.

Re: What gender are you?

-
Re: What gender are you?

Re: What gender are you?
Im a girl! Thats all i really have to say haha. Except for my mom hates snakes is terribly afriad of them yet i grew up loving them, but im an overall animal lover.
-
Re: What gender are you?
1.0 here. I have about 6.1 friends/relatives that are snake owners. Although, I am glad to observe an even mix of male and female customers that visit my reptile store. Reptile expos, on the other hand, are GREATLY numbered in the male catergory. Interesting....
-
Re: What gender are you?
100% female here. Tomboy at heart. I am more into snakes than my fiancee though.
-
Re: What gender are you?
Well, I'm 100% guy, but my girls love snakes as much as I do.

Haha, I couldn't have said it better myself... I was always the little tomboy who'd come home covered in dirt... My Mom gave up on dresses because shorts and jeans were just more economical!
As for animals... If it has more than 4 legs you can count me out of it's fan club!!!
